  • Your preferred civics choices

Maybe kind of early for a poll. But I'd like to get a feel for what civics choices you guys are running when you have everything available to you. I'll make a poll, and you can explain your reasons in this thread.

For now I prefer Universal Suffrage, Free Speech, Emancipation, Free Market, and Free Religion

now to see if I have enough poll options to do this- I may have to leave off the lowest/default civics options

The poll is mulitiple choice, so I realize you can vote for all of them. I'm asking a lot of you guys to vote responsibly.

Representation, Bureaucracy, Emancipation, Free Market, and Organized Religion.

I'm found of super-cities(especially an uber capital) and like the trade/building speed boosts of Free Market/Organized Religion. Emancipation is mainly to get rid of the happiness hit but the hamlet bonus is nice too.

I have no preferred civic, it all depends on the situation
This space is empty... or is it?

Some of the civics are almost useless
        example:

        - Slavery. It cost way too much pop for one production since your cities are a lot more worth now you can't sacrifice population that easily.
        - Emancipation. The growth is nice but not that needed. Only thing is that I hate the penalty you get from it.

Representation (love the beaker bonus, extra happiness is good too)..although I'll switch to Sufferage (if I have it) on occasion to rush stuff.

Bureaucracy (I like my capitol to be a power center, not just another city.)

Serfdom (to get improvements done quicker), once my improvements are done I start to consider Emancipation.

State Property (lowers the upkeep of my cities and provide extra food with waterwheels/workshops)

Organized Religion (build bonus is great...until I run out of things to build)

              Suffrage
Free Speech (surprised to see so many Bureaucrats)
              Emancipation (or sometimes Caste System)
              Free Market
              Organized Religion

Slavery is generally considered the most powerful civic (and even to the point that it was specifically weakened in BtS via the Slave Revolt event). When used properly, it is an efficient way to convert food into hammers nearly 1:1, with little 'damage' to your civ otherwise. Particularly in the pre-Ren era, where you have a low happiness cap (max people working), you might as well slave in your food cities, rather than just waste food.

It all depends on where I am in the game.

Slavery is good at the beginning of the game, and at the start of any conquer phase. Whipping conquered cities down to a managable size while getting those critical buildings.

Monarchy early if using a CE vs an SE
                    REP when running an SE
PS during those drawn out wars.

Organized rel early when building your infrastructure, Free religion for the science and happy boost later. Theocracy for building troops.

STATE PROPERTY is big for me since I usually have large empires.

So it depends on where I am in my game and what I'm currently trying to accomplish.

Civic choices obviously depend on many variables, especially what era you are in, but since the OP says "once they are all available," I made my choices based on the late game.

Universal suffrage: I like cottage economies, so this is a no brainer.

Free Speech: Once again, +2 coins per cottage is awesome for the cottage economy. The culture is useful too, since it I do most of my warring late, and need the help to combat 800 turns of culture accumulation.

Emancipation: In the late game all my tiles are improved, so I usually lose resources if I slave, and I don't need faster workers. And since I don't have a specialist economy, caste doesn't interest me. So it would be Emancipation by default, but it has the bonus for developing cottages too!

Free market: This is, for me, the closest call. I really like state property, and since I play on huge maps, the maintenance removal is relevant. However, it is easier to auto-spread corps than to micro my tile improvements empire wide, so I go free market.

Organized religion: Infantry don't need theology to beat rifles and longbows, late game is conquest time, so pacifism is out, and I need faster builds on buildings and wonders more than happy and a few extra culture.

I hadn't noticed at all. That explains a lot... thanks ...

                            Representation
                            Bureaucracy
                            Caste System
                            State Property
                            Free Religion

Interesting how many votes there are with so few comments. The above is my ideal while wrapping up a win. Obviously, slavery is useful early, free trade has its uses pre-Communism, and Vassalage plus Theocracy assist in creating more powerful units during a rush of them. Organized religion has a long run of usefulness for production balanced against the enemies produced by having any religion. So many choices.

I voted, but it's kind of invalid cause it changes through the game.
I use Representation if I have the Pyramids, HR otherwise, and switch to US later.
                              I use Bureaucracy until FS.
I use slavery for a long time, sometimes I will switch to CS, and most of the time will switch to Emancipation.
State Property is my favorite, but spend time in either FM or Merc for a while.
OR is usually the only religious civic I ever use.
