Swordsmen after a choke can walk through cities, otherwise they are only the better of the three early melee units against archers and cities while the other two are much better against melee and mounted.
Trying to get any of those out with an archer/skirmisher or a quechua standing on your iron is no walk in the park. On a hill even a lone warrior can be a serious inconvenience. Not to mention that if you ignore it more quechua coming after the first could take most of your cities.
Similarly axemen can limit their production of metal units, plus balance out their axemen, while you start bringing in swordsmen/catapults/elephants to take cities. Taking cities without losing lots of units will take time, however you do it, and sending in a group of fairly easy to counter swordsmen without adequate protection is a good way to lose an army that represents a lot of production.
