  • Great Generals

.... an addition to Great People.

It seems that only builders get rewarded with great people in Civ4. What about those who like to fight a bit?

In Civ3, the only way to get military leaders was through war.

Therefor, i'm proposing a new Great Person, the Great General. He can only be created through chance during combat. Odds are higher the higher the experience of a unit & the higher the odds were against it.

What shall this GP's special ability be? Well, a few things come to mind. Create a War monument in a city which generates culture & perhaps lowers anti-war angry faces. The other function could be that he could rush a military unit, or give another unit a real XP boost (say around 20 XP).

I guess he should also be able to start a golden age (in conjunction with other GP's).

    Opinions?

rushing one military unit would be kinda inconsequential. how about a continental boost to unit production for 8 turns?

i like the idea otherwise. civ4 is damn hard on us warmongers.

I've been wondering about that too. Sounds like a great idea! And instead of speacilest citizens that boost the great person, have # number of military units, or # of victories...

        Should be possibleable to modded...

You could have him, for his permanent building, found a "Military Doctrine" that adds a certain amount of experience to units built in that city.

Yeah the fact that there are no great generals is I think symptomatic of how much Civ4 has emphasized pansy-ness over War

Rush military techs should be another option.

Hmm. It might be too powerful, but what if they upgraded all your troops? Call it "Drive Military Reform" or something.

Throwing a couple of ideas out there:

--Gets 3 (or 4) free promotions when created; these promotions apply to ALL units on that tile. (Strong ability, potentially game-breaking. Could possibly be countered by having a chance of the general being "captured" whenever a unit on the tile is defeated when defending, representing how without a general's leadership, an army can fall apart.)

--Rushing of military techs/improvements/Wonders. (Fits in well with the abilities of the other GPs.)

--Can be used to rush a combat unit in a city some number of times. The General would have a limited number of uses (2d6+8, or 10-20, sounds reasonable) of this; I don't know whether to have the general be expended after the last one or not. (If we do expend him after he has no uses of this ability left, probably best to let the player know how many uses of this ability he has remaining. )
oh god how did this get here I am not good with livejournal

YOU are the great general (unless you are NOT)!
Also, Great Generals are rendered in the game as Great Promotions.

to great generals. I haven't played a warmonger game yet. But I think my next game will be. I'm tired of getting space ship victories all the time. And I can't manage to get a cultural or diplomatic.

I like this idea.. something that adds +2 exp to any land unit built in that city would be special and not unbalancing.. whats +2 exp anyway when it is difficult to get a lvl 5 soldier as it is.

Make it so that there is a small percentage chance that the general spawns from a victory of a lvl 5 unit. It would be very rare.

and being a navy vet, I should ad we should have great admirals as well. .

the obvious boost would be +2exp to naval units.

I haven't looked at the XML and I'm not an XML expert, but it seems that it should be possible to add a new building and a new great person type. The part that would be tough changing the rules for how he's generated to be something other than Great Person Points.

It shouldn't be a chance of occurring. There should be a Great People Point queue that gets built up from attacking/defending successfully. These points should come out in the GP queue in whatever city builds an appropriate National Wonder (War Academy? Pentagon? West Point?).

There should also be Soldier specialists, who give +1 hammer/+1 XP to units produced at that city.

The general can of course create a Super Soldier (+3 hammers/+3 XP), create a Military Base (produces one melee unit every 3 turns), or research a technology.
