Philosophical is the best trait for Great People - +50% production rate.

(Industrious is also good, but there's no Phi/Ind leader in the standard game.)

In addition, you'll want to build the Parthenon (Great Wonder) and the National Epic (National Wonder).
Participating in my threads is mandatory. Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.

Great merchants as super-specialists should not be underrated. They give +6 gold, and +1 FOOD. This can be extremely helpful. I usually actually make them super specialists more than I use them for trade missions.

Five or six super-specialist great merchants, a shrine, all the usual improvements, and Wall Street, and you are set financially for life.

I never mind great prophets too much either, as they make great super-specialists (+2 hammers, +5 beakers).

Great Prophets as superspecialists give more money than anything else, Monkspider, I think you got your numbers wrong.

They give 2 hammers and 5 gold typically (I don't think they give any science). Of course all superspecialists give an additional 3 science under representation.

As such prophets are great for a financial center. You can have more land devoted to generating money and less to generating production with a prophet specialist. As with the merchant, a bank, market, and some other things thrown in (along with wall street) and you can easily be generating a lot of money even with science at 100%. Even more helpful if you founded a religion or two in that city (with the special building which gives even more revenue for that city).

If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper -- that makes this country work." - Barack Obama

            You're right, my apologies.

              Err. You mean 100%, right?

I do indeed mean 100%. My bad.

It's the Parthenon that gives you +50%.
