  • Early Wonders

There are a lot of wonders to be built in the two first eras of the game; however i don't think they have a very great potential (besides from getting GP). Do you share my opinion? Which wonders are worth building?

Do you build early wonders if you have the "appropriate" resource only (Stone for Pyramids, Marble for Oracle...) or are there wonders you would like to build systematically?

The Pyramids are always good, because you can get a GE or two out of them.

Once you get a GE, you can use it to get the Oracle, and use the Oracle to obtain Theology and found Christianity.

That's one sure fire way to found Christianity before anyone else.

Of course, you may get a few more GE's, and that's a few more Wonders you can build

This works especially well whith the PHI trait.

The alternative if you can build the Oracle quickly yourself is to wait until you get Theology and then build the Sistine Chapel with the GE. The Sistine Chapel is usually much harder to produce during the early years than the Oracle.

I usually play with the max number of civs, so if you don't have the appropriate resource it is unlikely you can build the wonder without sacrificing all sorts of other things. So no must-builds for me, at least not yet (after a week of play).

Indeed it can be a solution: build with stone and use the GE to build the marble structures...
However using the GE for the Oracle looks like a waste to me: it's a "cheap" wonder

Yeah, I now that I think about it, I don't think I would use a GE for the Oracle unless I knew someone else was building it and I had the PHI trait.

I find Stonehenge to be useful as a ghetto version of the Creative trait. I get to push my borders back in all cities without spending build turns anywhere but the capital. I do play an Industrious civ though so it's much less of a pain to build it.

If I'm a Philo based civ I tend to really like the Parthenon. Other than that I try to hit up the Pyramids and the Oracle. If mainly water based and a financial civ, the G. Lighthouse isn't too shabby either.

The Pyramids and the Parthenon are my favs.

The Pyramid allows you to go right to representation civic. If you have some good population land the extra science from all specialists and the extra happiness for your top five cities really puts you out front. As stated GEs are nice to have, I think they are probably the strongest GP for the later part of the game as they can rush some very useful wonders.

The Parthenon will mostly produce Great Artists, which has the ability to make a great work of art. The great work of art will get your border cities upto the third expansion . I've used this to secure land for later developement and to culture flip cities. The boost in GP birth rate also insures you'll get a few more GPs out of all your early game wonders

Many of the early wonders are very cheap.
Stoneghenge 120 hammers... if stone > 60 hammers.
If Industrial trait -> 40 hammers!

40 hammers for a wonder?? Such wonders are supposed to suck!

In my current game, I have a city that just keep on pumping out wonders (it takes about 10 turns for it to finish one wereafter it instantly starts building the next one)
With the right civics, city improvemets, civilization traits and resourses (stone/marble) this IS possible and should the wonders be more powerful than they are, my civilization would very quickly become too powerful.
                  GOWIEHOWIE! Uh...does that
                  even mean anything?

the Pyramids are a must have for me.

+3 research to each specialist or +25% to unit production? yep I'll take that thanks as it pays for itself extremely quickly

Stonehenge is a no-brainer, I build it as soon as I have two cities. It's cheap and it gets you a great prophet to use with your religion to build a shrine. And the second benefit are the free obelisks, culture is a great weapon for grabbing land.

So far I always tried the Pyramids, but although it's useful (that third civic is pretty cool when you only have a few cities) I find it really expensive to build. Later in the game I can build wonders more easily so the GE isn't really that much a benefit. The build time of the Pyramids is harming my expansion a lot. So far I haven't been able to connect to stone or whatever it needed in time for the Pyramids. If I got the stone I'd surely build it.

Stonehenge is indeed great, when you are not Creative, especially as new cities do not generate culture at all, so unless you are Creative or have Obelisk in them, they will be limited to a 3x3 tiles radius.
The problem with leadership is inevitably: Who will play God?

I tend to favor phil/ind leaders so Stonehenge and Parthenon are both gimmies and Pyramids is ALWAYS a gimmie no matter who I play (Gotta have Representation ASAP). With the wonder bonus from Ind I try to build as many wonders as possible but those 3 are my only early "must haves".

Is there a leader with both PHI and IND?

I was looking for one and couldn't seem to find one.

It seems to me that most of the good builder traits (PHI/IND/SPI) have been paired with AGG for some reason.

I like Ghandi because he's IND/SPI, and that Arab guy because he's SPI/PHI.

Man, I really wish you had three traits to choose from! I really like all three of those!

I wish. It's one or the other. I generally do Phi/Spi or Ind/Spi.
