What actually happens when you set a worker to Automate Trade Network?

As far as I can tell they strew roads (and later rail) hither and yon making sure all your cities are connected.

Odd as it seems this is a great thing in the early game cause I'm usually pumping out two or three settlers at a time and it beats trying to get them on the grid later or missing Swords for 20 turns cause I didn't realise they weren't connected to that one city.

BTW trade does not follow a road over a river (I think this stops at some tech but I don't know which). So if you can go around the bottom of the river, you should. Otherwise you won't get the resource on the other side of the river. I had a capitol nestled snug in the crook of a river. I was loving the helth until I realised that I can't trade anything cause everything is on the other side of the darn river!

    Very upsetting.

I haven't seen this. If you road to the river you create a little dock in the river. Then the trade route continues down the river to your city. You can also create a road on the other side of the river somewhere and you'll get another dock on that side and trade route can continue down that road. Never had a problem with it yet.
