  • AI and Victory Conditions

Does the AI realize which victory conditions are in play? For instance, if I turn off the Spaceship victory condition, will the AI adjust its focus to win by another means? Or is it just plugging along trying to do whatever it can do like in Civ 3?

Anyone have any experience with this?

Well... lacking any other feedback (thanks for the bump Dis!) I'll start a game with Time and Spaceship turned off and see what the AI does. Results in a couple days.

I've played a game to the modern era with spaceship turned off, and pretty sure I saw the AI building some of the spaceship parts. Also grant that this was on warlord, they could be smarter on higher difficulty

If you start a custom game with a space race victory disabled, no one can build the Apollo Program project... it's obsolete for all civs from the first turn. Same thing if you turn off a diplomatic victory... no one can build the UN.

that sucks because UN is useful for more than diplomatic victory. Especially if you don't like worrying about nukes flying around.

I think, but don't take my word for it, that the topics voted upon can be modded through the xml. I found them when I was looking for something else, and didn't give it much more thought and passed on by it.

You could always take that vote out that triggers a win for a diplomatic game, but leave the UN in I guess, if you wanted to ban nukes.

The AI understanding of victory condition can't be determined because, yeah, if a victory condition is turned off, then competing for it becomes impossible anyway. No space victory = no Apollo.

Wouldn't it make more sense to simply disable the Diplomatic Victory proposal, rather than the entire UN?

I just noticed with a custom game I can disable all victory options. Including time. So I'm guessing the game doesn't end at 2050. So what happens if I manage to conquer the last remaining civ? Do I just keep playing? Probably.

I really don't want to play this game out though. But pressing the F8 screen, nothing shows up under victory conditions- as I would suspect. I'll restart a similar game with a couple of them disable and see how it turns out.
