  • Firaxis acquired by Take Two ?

Check out the details at http://ir.take2games.com/ReleaseDeta...leaseID=178951

I don't know if this operation is going to give us much good, after seeing so many great and historic development studios being almost killed by a similar acquisition (Westwood, Parallax/Volition/Outrage, Bullfrog, Gray Matter, Massive, Digital Anvil, Barking Dog, and the list goes on...).

And none of those dev houses were acquired by other, more known-to-be-ruthless publishers. None were especially acquired by EA. Nope.

That probably just means that they get to program another game for them, so the bills will be paid~!

and after sid went through all that to start his own company. . . .

I work in software and there is only one goal in this business:

Start your own company and do something cool so that you'll get bought out by a big company and make lots of money.

If it was really Sid's own company, then it was (at least partly) his decision to allow the buyout, since Firaxis is a private company, which means he wanted to be bought more than he wanted to remain independent. Being on your own is nice, but a truck full of cash at your front door is nicer.

so thats why civ4 is so incomplete. they just wanted to see if sid's game would sell so they could decide whether to buy the name or not...

does this mean we get SMAC 2? If so, then I support it.

So much for creative freedom. Now if Take2 don't like a game idea its dead in the water. Sure you'll have more money for developement since they can consolidate resources, but Take2 has final say as to what the money will be spent on. Looks to me that the people who owned Firaxis decided it was time to cash in. Considering how they got screwed over by both Atari and Take2, dribbling developement cash until very near the deadline creating a rushed/bugged game even though it appeared to be years in developemnt, I would sell out to. I expect to see familiar faces moving on in the next year.

SMAC franchise is owned by EA. Unless Take2 forks over big bucks for it you'll never see SMAC2

Announcements coming soon from the Take Two marketing machine...

"Take Two names new head of development, as Soren Johnson leaves to 'pursue other opportunities'."

"Today, Take Two Studios, confirmed that the highly anticipated Civilization V will be delayed. A new release date was not given. In other news, two additions expansions for the aging Civ IV were announced, with an expected retail price of $49.99 each."

                              "Gone Gold today:
