I have a question or two...

    1. What do the colors in the population number on my cities mean? They seem to have three colors: pinkish, white, bluish.

    2. Anyone have any insight into the unit health bars that can optionally be toggled on? I know for the most part what I am seeing, but sometimes the bar is segmented (after barrages, etc.)

    3. Does anyone know why specialists sometimes have a yellow highlight box around them, but other times they don't? I am referring to when they have been assigned- sometimes they are highlighted, and sometimes not.

Well, I can answer your first question:

Pinkish means not enough food (i.e., starvation). White means no population growth. Green means surplus food and hence population growth.

      3. I had been wondering that as well. I thought it had something to do with whether it is a free specialist that you can't put on a tile or not, but I'm not sure.

If the specialist has a box around him, you manually created that specialist. As a consequence, the city governor will never reassign that population point to a different task - even if that means that the city is starving. If there's no box around the specialist, the city governor thought it would be a good idea to create him, but may reassign the population point if you change your preferences or the terrain around the city.

Super specialists (joining a GP) are below normal specialists and have a little star in their icon.
