... or the lack of promotion opportunities.

What was the highest XP any of your units has ever gotten?

Mine was 28. Since the min XP gain per combat is 1, i had roughly 15 combats with that unit. Quite an achievement, considering most units don't last more than 3 combats, if they are lucky.

This got me thinking, because you need at least a unit with 27 XP to get the "commando" promotion (use of enemy roads). And even if you did get that promotion, would you really send that unit into combat alone with no backup? Would be quite a waste.

So to me it seems there are so many wonderful promotions, but 50% of them will never see any meaningful use.

So what i've done was set Min XP gain from 1 to 4. So each unit is guaranteed 4 XP per combat it wins. This "new" promotion would also improve future combat surivival and as such really add an RPG layer, where you can build your units up and call them "elite" instead of the system we have now.

In my latest game i've had 2 infantry units with XP ~40 that stayed with me from the ancient age on up. Those are 2 serious arse kickers, but not undefeatable as i found out.

Is anyone else unhappy with the minimal XP gain from vanilla Civ4?

I had a horse archer up to 28 or 29 today. He died after his second or third fight after being upgraded into a gunship.

you can get as many promotion points as you like
for a unit, if you don't mind sacrificing dozens
of catapults (or later equivalents) like lemmings
                in battle.

                - Find enemy units. (a stack of 2 if preferable)
                - Kamikaze Catapults at them till they are nearly
dead. (this is why you need at least 2 enemies, one
could die by accident with your last cat attack)
                - finish off enemy with unit you want to see promoted.
                - rinse, repeat.

It takes a long time,is costly, and if the unit you
want to promote gets ambushed and killed, you'll
wanna hang yourself with your mouse cord, but it's
                possible.
