  • Space race and modern age (and wars)

It seems to me the space ship parts are so expensive to produce, you can't even think about doing anything else in the modern age except produce those. The only wonder I bothered building was the space elevater. Without that, I wouldn't have won by 2050, and may have lost the space race.

My only complaint is there is no opportunity to have any modern wars. If you don't get your ass moving building space ship parts, you will lose. And this is playing epic speed games. I won't even touch normal speed.

Yes I know, I should disable this option. But it seems like a cheat. I like to give the AI every opportunity to win.

And what's up with the diplomatic victory. Has anyone managed this. I tried to give every technology I had to my rivals and hope they voted for me. No one voted for me .

I've only played a couple full games, so I haven't fully played out the possibilities. This is why I'm posting this. If you guys have had different experiences with the modern age (yes I know there are no official ages as in civ3, but you know what I mean) and winning the game.

Or maybe my cities just weren't productive enough. I thought I built all the production related city buildings. Maybe I missed something. What do you guys do to improve city production? My space ship parts sometimes take 50 or 60 turns to complete.

I just won a diplomatic victory. It was kinda underwhelming--you don't get a victory movie at all.

the only victories I have gotten so far are culture victories

to improve production, build forge, factory, build three gorges damn...

beyond that, max out production from improvements with mines (or lumbermills in forest squares)...

or you can build farms and get extra specialists with your excess population (engineers add to your base production)

I haven't even tried building spaceship parts yet, so I don't know how tough it can be to build those...

culture victories seem to be the easiest for me so far... I might try conquest, that seems like the next most fun way to win...

I have no desire for diplomatic win...

      I have disabled the UN

      the resolutions piss me off
To us, it is the BEAST.

I forgot about that. The 3 gorges dam. What does it do?

It provides electricity. But what does that mean? I still get the option to build hydro plants. So I'm assuming it doesn't put a hydro plant in every city as in civ2 and civ3. So I've been building hydro and nuclear plants as well. Actually my last game, I couldn't get the 3 gorges dam.

And my nuclear plant melted down. . How do I prevent that?

You just cant give tech and goodies to A.I. to be in good diplomaticd terms with them. You have to share religion or/and civics and/or having treaty with them since a long time. (Open borders/Defense, Giving ressource to them for a long term)

Giving gift to A.I. to not change anything in the short term. Diplomatic is a long well planned victory... Or a chance of luck if you are nice with them... or some of them.

          See ya,

how did you get the culture victory? I'd like to try that. Do you just build every culture improvement in 3 cities? Or how do you do it? How do you do religion? I'm still learning this religion thing. My current game I didn't bother (and didn't have the capacity) to found a religion. I just converted to someone else's. I'm not sure what effect this will have (aside from reduced happiness until I get free religion). Do you build missionaries?

I guess you could use the great artists to create great works. I forgot about that. I did that for the first time my current game. To help push back cultural borders that were right up to my city. I love culture bombs.

I have won the space race victory once, this happened in the year 1965. It was very close since the AI started a long time before I could even begin (I was behind in tech). I didn't build the space elevator, nor did I have the gorges dam
While I was building it I attacked the enemy (on another island), but I couldn't build new units (the island I lived on was small, so I didn't have many cities)

Also I once won the diplomatic victory, only one of the AIs voted for me... it didn't matter though since with my votes alone I could still win... I wasn't planning to win the game this way, but one of the enemies was getting too close to build the space ship... this was the most boring victory ever though... no wonder movies at all

The cultural victory was the hardest victory I've ever gotten though. From the very beginning I did everything I could to raise culture in 3 cities, but the 3rd city wasn't legendary until the very last turn (I won 2050)... a big part was my own fault since I made a huge mistake: I one of the cities that became legendary was very badly chosen, because I built a city in the dessert. The top 3 and bottom 3 tiles was water, the rest was dessert/mountains/hills... the city never grew larger than size 2 (Great Artists saved this city)

(Btw, I always play on noble)
This space is empty... or is it?

One of the best way I've seen so far.

You concentrate all the culture in 3 city, build all the improvment, discover the more religion you can, (if you make all the culture improvment for each religion, you'll be a culture creator). Rise the sidebar of the culture. Concentrate all your great leader in the 3 city you choose.... And go for the Legendary score!

                Ride'on!
