  • Sea and Air unique units?

What happened to the sea and air based unique units from civ3?

Would have been good to give the Germans u-boats instead of subs. And the F-15 was good for the U.S.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if the sub still has the ability to target a selected unit in a stack? That was a major boon for the sub.

Thats a negative on the sub feature - its new "boon" is that it has a high withdraw chance. Combine that with "flanking" promotions and its a nice toy to harass the enemy with.

Mostly people didn't think much of the naval UUs in Civ3, particularly because naval warfare was often not very important.

The F15 came so late in the game that it was usually clear whether you were going to win or lose by the time it came around. I think it is a good thing that the Americans get an earlier UU.

In Civ 3 you could use submarines to launch tactical nukes on coastal cities. If I remember correctly, tactical nukes had a shorter range than ICBMs, but were immune to SDI defense.

It's a shame to see submarines having lost this ability, isn't it ?

In the manual and the civilopedia, they made the (fuzzy) distinction of ICBMs and "nukes", when in fact, there is only one type of nuclear unit in the game. I think the tactical nuke unit was eliminated from the game pretty late in development.

I don't miss it all that badly, though. The option to put a nuke unit on board a nuclear sub was interesting and reflective of the Cold War history, but ultimately not very useful.
