Spinny World and no further?

I've just gotten Civ4. My graphics cards should support T&L.

I've installed Civ, and tried to run it and I get what I presume is a load up screen. It's a spinning world with Civ4 above. But I can't get any further. No menu pops up, I can't get anything to happen.

Any idea at all what the problem might be?

I had the same problem initially with my nVidia 5700FX video card. After upgrading to the 81.85 driver set from nVidia's site, the game started up normally. If you've got an nVidia, you might want to try that.
