    ...HELP!

Sadly, I'm not nearly smart enough to decipher the computer jargon in a lot of these threads and get my game working. I'm am teh stoopid.

I've got a NIVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420. And I downloaded the latest drivers.

Funny thing is, before I updated the drivers, I could actually play the game kind of. I'd get a message about being under the recommended specs and how the game was automatically changing some of the settings, but then I'd get to play...well, like a few turns until it crashed. But anyway...

Uploaded and installed the new drivers and I ended up with the black tile thing. No Cheshire Cat problems, but I could only see elevated terrain. And black.

Sooooo, I restored to my previous days settings since it seemed like the lesser of two evils. Well, when I did that, everything was the same as before, except when I went to choose a leader, I could no longer see the little popup that tells you the different strengths and bonuses for that leader (unless I totally hallucinated that I could do that on my first game).

Anyway, uninstalled Civ IV, uploaded the latest drivers...again, reinstalled Civ IV, and I'm back to the black tile thing and I still can't see the leader popup menu.

    Please. Help. Me.

I'll tell you anything you need me to tell you and install anything you tell me to install. Just fix me. Please.

Oh, Windows XP, HP Pavillion, AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+, and 512 MB of RAM. Service Pack 2 installed.

Be my hero. Do it. You'll feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

I have a similar setup (with an older, slower Intel processor) and it runs fine. There are only a couple of minor graphical issues

Did you install the version of DirectX that came on the CD?

Yes. The game updated my version of DirectX.

Is this something that I'm going to have to hope the patch takes care of?
