ATI Radeon 9600 - help!!

Hi!

Against my better judgement I purchased Civ 4 beta this morning.

First attempt at loading killed my card (major error, needs reboot, or something).

I have successfully installed the latest ATI drivers, the game now starts to load, but when "Init Engine" comes on the loading screen a pop-up says "Failed to initialize renderer - check directX version and graphics settings"

I have updated DirectX from the CD and double checked microsofts version, I have also fiddled with the AGP settings of the graphics card to no avail. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Edit: My system is XP Pro SP2, 2.1ghz AMD, 1 gig ram, and the Radeon 9600XT

Beta? I should think the Final is more compatible...

I followed Solvers advice from the help forum, lo and behold Civ actually now runs! Many thanks!

I'm using Radeon 9600 XT. No problems. And after doing a recent hard drive reformat, I'm using the original drivers that came with my video card. Not updated ones.
