Try disconnecting from the Internet (or disabling your network interface if you have a permanent connection), then Start->Run...->services.msc
Find Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing and stop it (r-click --> Stop)
See if it makes any difference
(make sure you Start the Windows firewall before re-enabling your Internet connection).
If you have another antivirus/firewall application, shut it down before running the game.
If it makes you feel better, my Windows Firewall service is disabled and I have no software firewall on my PC. All protection is handled by other devices (see answer to SpencerH above).
I still had all the crashes detailed above...
