can't found religion using oracle?

I was just playing a game that was going well. I finished the oracle and one of the choices I had for the free tech was Theology, naturally I picked it because it was the most expensive and useful choice. Now this put me into the medieval age right after getting into the classical age, still in 600 BC! Unfortunately, discovering the tech didn't let me found Christianity. What gives? Is this a bug or is this how it's supposed to work? If I didn't found Christianity using the oracle, will the next civ to discover it do so?

actually.. what most likely happened was that someone got to theology before you.

Yikes. Sounds like a bug to me. The only thing I can think of is that maybe you don't have enough cities left to found religions with? I've always wondered what would happen when you have, say, 3 cities, and have founded 4 religions.

Unless the religion screen which shows Christianity as "not founded yet" is broken, I don't think so.

Also, I do have enough cities to support it, so that's not the problem either.

And also if you have only 1 city and find 2 religions both religions go to that city.

I just founded Confucianism by using the Oracle to get Code of Laws for free. So that's definitely not a problem here.

Seems to me that someone probably just beat you to the tech.

Try going to the next turn. I've had that problem where I get the free tech but don't found the religion until the turn after.

Q - has the religion not been founded yet, or has the city not been discovered yet?

Also, you can crosscheck it with the "trade" screen where it shows what technologies you have and the others. IF theology doesn't show up (assuming a close tech race) then someone else already has it.

That's correct, when founding a religion with the free tech from the Oracle you have to wait one more turn. Just end your turn and the animation will pop up.
