Do you loose your missionary after he spreads his religion in another players city? Also is there a downside to pumping out alot of them to saturate the others cities? Catherine has NO religion as of right now and I am thinking that she needs Hinduism, so I have sent some missionaries to show her the way, especially in Moscow. Is there a possible downside to this that I am not seeing?

If you plan to go to war with her shortly, you will get increased war weariness. Other than that, if you have to hindu holy city, and a shrine, there are not many other major problems...You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

They disappear after spreading a religion. Not only that, but if the target city already has another religion in it, you risk failing your religion-spreading mission and your missionary will have been used up for nothing.I'm building a wagon! One thing she will get out of this is more access to happiness and science producing buildings. She also has the possibility of having +1 culture in those cities if she changes her state religion to the one your spreading (guaranteed if she is religionless) and +25% production if she uses the organized religion civic."They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." ~ Ben Franklin

Missionaries have a one time use. The more religions already present in the city the larger the chance it fails.
Very useful to convert intended allies, but do it before they adopt another religion. Spreading religion in your own empire is also very useful, you can build temples and monasteries for extra culture and happiness.

Plus as founder of a religion, you get 1 gold for each city that has that religion - foreign cities included. A worldwide religion = lots of cash. You may need a certain building to gain that cash though. Someone check for me.I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Well, those shields could have been used for something else.Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

A newbie-question that seems to fit in this discussion: I've been playing around with those missionaries and most of all I think they're a lot of fun. But now I'm in a late game and without monasteries (obsoleted and forgotten about them earlier on) I can only build jewish missionaries, although I have a lot more religions going on (spread like the flu earlier on ;-)
Is it important to construct monasteries earlier on? Or ain't I supposed to worry about missionaries after I've got all those new wartoys I've invented? Or is there maybe another way to train missionaries later on?

Yes, it is important to build monasteries before you discover a tech ("Scientific Method" AFAIK) which makes monasteries obolete and doesn´t let you build them anymore (but any monasteries already in production at the time where you discover the tech, will get completed normally).
So no, there won´t be any way of building missionaries for religions which spread into your empire after discovery of said tech as you cannot build any new monasteries (unless of course you make the new religion your state religion and adopt "Organized Religion", allowing you to build missionaries for the state religion in every city within your empire )Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. Weather or not your attempt success or fails, the missonary is used up. But Missonaries are some of the cheapest units in the game. Still, I recomend founding in their capital first followed by large major cities well away from each other. Once it's started, it will tend to naturally slowly spread along their trade routes.
This of course assumes that your wanting to exploit them peacefully rather than using your military and these are your state relgion missonaries.
Yes, the more religions your missionary has to compete with, the less the chance of success.
There's also a point in sending state religion favorite missionaries to your own major cities that end up with a non state religion or two reaching there first.1st C3DG Term 7 Science Advisor 1st C3DG Term 8 Domestic Minister
