  • Civ IV Movies

Ok, I'm new to this site, so please bare with me. I can start, play, and all on Civ IV. One issue I do have seems to the videos. I am assuming as soon as you start the game a movie plays, but all I get is a multi colored screen. I can click my mouse and get to the menu, then I am to play the game. The issues comes back whenever I build a wonder. I assume a wonder movie is what pops up, but I get the multi colored screen. I click on that, and I can make up some words. Assuming that is the benefits of my wonder. I have the DX9 video and on windows XP. If I read correctly my CPU is 3.60 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM, and 1536 MHz of vitural memory. Any ideas what is causing the issue?

Now that I think of it, I have Civ III on the same computer. Not sure if that would cause any issue.

    Thank you for your help

All the wonder movies and the two intro movies are Bink files. Perhaps if you install Binks RadGame tools it might work.

RAD Game Tools' web page. RAD makes Bink Video, the Telemetry Performance Visualization System, and Oodle Data Compression - all popular video game middleware.

Download and install that. Let me know if it works. I was having audio stuttering in the movies the last time I played. Maybe it'll fix my problem too
I used to be Darkknight.. many many moons ago. "CTP2 is almost out!!" time.

Yep, I get that audio stutter too - it happens in about half of the wonder cinematics (that I have seen thus far) and always in the intro cinematic. I'm on a Sempron 3000+ with 512mb and Geforce 4 MX so I should be ok I think. Wonder why it doesn't affect all of the movies though....?

        1. Try to install a new version of binkw32.dll to the CIV4 main directory. (I've taken binkw32.dll V1.8d from the AOE3 Demo - CIV4 came with V1.6), so no more stuttering will be in the movies and the thing with the intro movie is, i've just disabled the 2 vids (they will be skipped during loading CIV4 - look at attachment, credit to www.civforum.de)
        2. Update the Miles Sound Driver Files http://www.radgametools.com/down/Mil...s/MSSDemo.exe. Install and copy theses newer codecs (V7.0d - CIV4 came with V7.0c) to CIV4/Miles/Win32/ and don't forget to copy MSS.dll in the CIV4 main directory.
        3. I've updated the python24.dll from V2.4 to 2.4.2. in CIV4 main directory. Get it from www.python.org/ , may increase performance a litte bit.

        That is my way

Can you maybe attach the new binkw32.dll file, too? I was looking for it on the net but can't find the new version. Or someone else. Thanks.

Danke. That was quick answer, it seems we are in the same time zone.

                  Well,
I'm kind of in the same position as the OP. Civ 4 runs in almost all respects fine on my system, including intro movies, but when it attempts to play an in-game movie (wonder created, victory, etc), the video and sound stutter something horrible. At this point I skip forward whenever a movie comes up because it's pretty much impossible to make out what the sound should have been, and the video is stopping for a half-second at a time.

Everything else works fine on my system, including HL2, World of Warcraft, etc. I've tried the remedies suggested in this thread- upgrading the bink and miles DLLs, to no avail.

                  System specs are:
3.0 ghz Pentium IV, 800mhz FSB
                  1 gig memory
GeForce 6800 video card, current drivers
SB Live! sound card, current drivers

                  Any other suggestions?

                    Did anyone get this fixed?

I also have a problem with my wonders movies - everything else runs great - I even went out and bought a Radeon 850 - but the sound on the movie goes in and out.

I have done all the previous suggestions and no dice.... did anyone ever fix this problem?

I updated all drivers you spoke about and noticed a good incrase in performance during videos but still get jumping sound while playing them ingame any ideas?
                      Thanks.

can you tell me how to get that python 2.4.2 dll file? I couldn't find the file. I think it may fix a problem I've been having.

                        Thanks

Just wanted to say that I had the same problem (not only stuttering movies but often not-appearing movies!). It affected both wonders and leader animations, but replacing the binkw32.dll file solved the problem (in fact, mine was not even a 1.6 but a 1.5.something). Thanks a lot moehrensteiner!! :-)

My setup is an Asus ATI 9600 and an AMD64 btw.

Replacing the dll worked for me as well. Now if only the game would stop locking up every 15 mins. Anyways thnks for the fix.
