I had assumed that disabling the "timed game" victory condition on the custom game setup screen keeps the game from ending in 2050 AD.

Choose the custom game option instead of Play Now. All the otional stuff like turning off the turn limit can be found there. I am playing a game without a turn limit and it's probably the best I have ever played- several nations on a small map and the victory condition is conquest. A white-knuckle game of last-man standing!
