I thought that Atztecs will not attack me and did not put units in my cities. I thought wrong.

Oh, Aztecs are one of the biggest bastards in game. Kublai Khan is also someone to watch out for - it's one thing to have the Hordes of Genghis Khan's horsemen to invade yours lands - it's another when the same hordes under Kublai Khan are armed in rifles and generally more technologically advanced than you are.

I've played on Chieftain and Warlord so far. (I'm upping the difficulty each game I win, and just finished my warlord win.) The chieftain games were completely boring, but even on warlord I've found A.I. attacking me suddenly unless I maintain very good relations, i.e. keeping them all the same religion as me.

Aztecs are a non-stop source of torment. If you start a game near Montezuma, prepare for his revenge. Greeks also tend to be a bit angry. Others are saying Mongols, but I haven't played a serious game with them in it.

Religion is a very key factor in your relations, and relations seem to be the overriding factor in declarations of war. Keep your competitors happy and they will mostly leave you alone, unless you have far fewer soldiers than cities. My experience so far, anyway.

I remember way back in Civ 1, being happy whenever I was exploring and ran into the Indians, because it meant I wouldn't have to deal with the Mongols (you could only have one or the other in a game.)

Maybe it depends what type of victory is on?
If you only cross domination then the AI will be more aggressive?

I find that the A.I. are pretty much agressive with the "lake style" map...

                Anyone notice that?

My game must be different ;-). I was blind sided by my Chinese neighbors whom apparently had built up quite a military in preperation for it. No prob there I'm holding my own all my attention to my borders in the North ... but wait the Persians align themselves with the Chinese against me and slip in 4 transports in the dark of night loaded with Mech Inf, Mod Arm, and Gunships. They rolled through Boston like a hot knife through butter!

I barely was able to keep them from taking Philly by the time I could react.

They came in hard and fast and in force!

                  I love this game.

i've played a few games and experienced some AI aggression, once when I was militarily weak but technologically strong the incas and greeks did a 2 front war on me and kicked my teeth in. end of game. lost 2 out of 5 cities in 3 turns. they burned my 2nd best city

"what can men do against such reckless hate?"
                    (spot the quote)

anyway I've seen england fight themselves to death against me for a resource of iron and I've seen the AI fight on and off wars for the full length of the game.

last game however was kinda interesting. endgame, played russia. had weak military (compared to the other superpowers USA and Mali) I was scared witless when I sent a spy to look them over. I built the space elevator and finished the SS race first. my first win! yeay! despite me winning the space race and having not half the military of america or mali, they left me alone to win. sort of nice, sort of boring.

one thing in that game that was very amusing however was the mongols and the spanish. both were stuck in the worst corner of the continent and were still inventing moderns when my spaceship reached AC. these two pathetic excuses for empires had been fighting eachother on and off (with no real effect... ) for generations. I then decided to do a little meddling

i gifted the mongols who were jewish (same as me) a few tanks and gunships. suddenly the traditional violent reversal of ownership of Old Sarai ended with spain collapsing like a rotten house of sticks. if I hadnt won the game I would have started doing lots of "nation building" strengthening friendly lesser nations and sending them against less friendly and annoying enemies that is a LOT of fun. playing the meddling superpower

comment though. although I was playing epic huge terra map I felt that the epochs lasted too short. if epic goes that fast normal must just fly by

Just as an example for those who think the AI is a little too peaceful, this screenshot

This is from a Terran, Large, 12 Civs, Noble game. There are eight more units in the next stack over, and my capitol there has a couple of Infantry, some SAM and Machine gun units, a pair of Gunships on sentry, and a fighter flying CAP.

Catherine and I have had our differences in the past, and she was Furious with me right before hostilities broke out, mainly due to my being friendly with the smaller civs between her and I, as well as my successfully siccing the Mongols on her the *last* time she attacked. However the last dozen turns or so she hadn't made any demands of me -- she just up and declared war, presumably AFTER her troops had transversed the continent

Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but she chose to attack right after I'd sent three transports full of armor, marines, and infantry over to The New World in an attempt to make it All Mine.

So yes -- I've found the AI to be quite rambunctious from time to time.

(For those interested in how this turned out -- Catherine sacked my capitol and devastated much of the countryside. I managed to get a lot of allies and managed to slow her down, as well as keeping her from resupplying the capitol from the sea, but in the intervening years she upgraded her troops to Mech Inf and brought in fighters and bombers. I got my capitol back during the peace process.)

AI will attack you soon enough. I've had Ghandi (yes, Ghandi, of all people) take out the Arabians and the Japanese by the 1950s (war started early 1800s) . This because I made him my best buddy in the game, and then just asked him to take on the other two, which had been consistently pestering me for luxury goods since 1000 BC.

Stirring the pot is definitely a good way to p!ss off the AI... just have one of your friendly allied civs declare war on someone you don't like. Guarantee something happens then.

They might take a little more prodding into action than they used to, but sometimes it doesn't take a lot to get a civ raging mad at you.

I've not been in any wars with the AI yet...

all my games have been on Noble so far...

I've been far superior of the AI though, maybe they are scared of me.

IMO, the problem isn't the AI itself but the combat system -- city offensives are very time-demanding and require large masses of troops since you can't effectively damage defenders themselves in a city with artillery troops. This leads to AI not declaring war until it has a very clear troop amount/quality/technology superiority, which in noble difficulty translates into AI almost never declaring any wars.

I've got into plenty of defensive wars in Monarch since I've been a builder, but the AIs don't seem to do wars with each other unless one of them has had such a bad starting place that it has an inferior army compared to the others.

I'm playing my games at Noble difficulty and finding the AI to be fairly warlike and generally irritable. The screen below is not a major force, but a larger and more aggressive landing party than I ever saw playing Civ III. Particularly at this difficulty setting.

Monty begins to move in on Spain. Nice mixed force:

"Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription is ... more cow bell!"

                                impressive force

I just jumped 2 difficulty levels to noble. At first I seemed to be struggling, but I'm finally pulling ahead. I started one war with the germans to get their oil.

Out of the blue the Mongols attacked me. But they only landed 1 infantry and 2 catapults. They have another galleon hanging around, I'm not sure what's on that boat. It took 2 cavalry, but I took out the infantry. I'm on an island by myself (hence the slow start), so as usual, the ai isn't that great at launching massive amphibious assaults.
