  • Game freeze? - turn AGP off

Many many users have problems with Civ4 locking the PC completely. It seems like a lot of these users have Radeon video.

Several users (myself included) have reported that the problem can be helped greatly by turning off AGP in the Catalyst Control Center (under advanced->smartgart slide AGP speed to 'off'). Reboot required.

After making this change, I saw no decrease in game performance or game movies/animations. Game freezing stopped almost completely.

    Notes:
    - I could not load saved games from before the change. Saved games after the change worked fine.

    - I did still have a freeze. One freeze in 4 hours of play. (previous to AGP change, freezing occurred every 5-10 minutes)

So give it a shot! Remember to turn AGP back on for other apps/games.

Update: using this fix I was able to run CivIV last night for about 6 hours straight.

System spontaneously rebooted after about 6 hours...wayyy longer than any other uninterrupted run.

I no longer live in fear of FDR popping up on the screen....

      What is your video card?

      Thanks,

        Thanks,
        Whoops, sorry...forgot to include specs.

        Radeon 9000 (128meg)
        MSI nforce 1 mobo
        Onboard audio (shockingly good!)
        Athlon 1800+ (~1.5GHz)
        1gig RAM

This system is a little older, but it has been a trooper. It plays HL2 pretty well (30-40fps), and CivIV looks fab.

Yep, this fixed it for me too. I was getting consistent crashes on the diplomacy screens, and now it's not happening anymore.

My PC still froze up after a couple of hours, but at least the game is now playable. Thanks!

          For reference, my system is:
          Athlon 1800+
          MSI K7N420 (nForce1) motherboard
          1 GB RAM
          Radeon 9600 XT

I've never, ever had any problems running other games.

Um, is this the case with Mobility Radeons too?

This did not work for my 8500DV; and I did notice a big slow down before the crash!

Glad it worked for the above posters though.

Awesome. I'm glad this is working for other people. CivIV is pretty damn fun if you can get it working.

Don't thank me, though. I read the fix from someone on the civfanatics board.
