  • Sharing food between cities?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that your cities in Civ 4 share food they produce, so that if one is starving, that food is being transported from another city.

However, I have been playing the game for some time and didn't notice this happening. Is this really the case or did I misunderstand it (and, for example, this applies only to food resources).
The problem with leadership is inevitably: Who will play God?

        You can't.

However when your cities are sharing tiles you can "steal" them.
Just click on the dark tiles in the city.

What do you mean exactly? That both cities can harvest that tile? Or only that the tile can be deselected in one city then selected by another?

                City A own the tile:
                City B wants it
Go in the B city and click on the tile you want (goes from darkened to bright)
City B can now work the tile
                City A lost the tile.

That both cities can harvest that tile?

The opposite. If city A uses a given tile, and you want city B to start using it, you can do it by clicking on the tile in city B, without having to deselect it in city A first (as was the case in previous Civs).

If you think about it, food resources that give health(cows, wheat, etc.) are almost like sending food directly to other cities in your empire. Since net unhealthiness is added to your food consumption, an extra red cross is equivalent to an extra bread slice in large cities.

So this means that the "farm rich" city that you just built on a newly discovered river can't help feed your empire - since all food produced will only contribute to it's own growth?

About the only thing you could do with that city is turn it into a Great Merchant factory and start super specialist spaming the underfed cities (Great Merchant gives +1 food).

Just make sure to get all possible food related special resources because those DO get shared between all of your cities that have trade connections. Not much else you can do other than pumping a city up with GMs.
