Played first game for the experience, was ahead by alot , attacked a enemy city with tanks, beleive the opponent had longbow and I think spearmen, lost three battles, how?

Did the city have walls? Chichen Itza? A large cultural bonus? Did you soften the city before attacking by bombers or artillery? Did your units have experience, did the opponent's units have experience?

when you right click and hold it over the enemy it gives you the odds for the combat, and the bonuses each side had...how big was the difference in the odds?
