  • Religion?

Can someone please explain this? I was the first to research religions A, B, & C. I made B my state region. Yet none of my cities adopted B as their religion, except for the capital. Why? Also, the only religious structures I could build in my cities were for A & C, and not for B my state religion. Why? There wasn't even a selection in the capital for B religious buildings. What's going on?

    Thanks

Just because you switch your state religion doesn't mean your people will just go with the flow. You have to build missionaries and spread the faith.

Also are you sure your capitol has B religion? Maybe you are looking at it wrong or maybe you just missed the building. I advise you to look again in any case.

You can only build religious buildings in a city for the religions that are in the city.
If your state religion has less representation in your city then other religions you'd better switch state religion.

The religions starts to spread themselves if you build the shrine in the holy city.

There is also a chance of a religion spreading in your civilization to other cities (or foreign cities) that have no religion at all. However, once one of your cities adopts some foreign religion and then you found your own religion in another city, you will need either missionaries or the shrine (buildable in the religion-founding city by using up a Great Prophet) to let it spread out.

A bit off-topic of the top message... but can I send missionairies past another civ's border WITHOUT and "Open Borders" treaty? Or are they more "invisible"?

You can't - missionaries are visible and are blocked by closed borders. Also, in order to work, they need to enter the same tile as the city they are preaching too (they don't work like spies in earlier civs) so you can't do it either while being at war.

How do you tell which is the "Holy City"? I thought it was the other way around, you built the shrine and that made it the "Holy City".

Nope. When a civilization founds a religion, one of its cities is selected randomly as the holy city (the religion icon next to it then has a small star to indicate the holy city). You can then move your Great Prophet to such city (and this city only) to build the shrine.

This is to prevent players founding multiple religions and then holing them all up in the same city (e.g. their capital) for easier defense/management. Of course if you have only one city, then it will always be the same city anyway, but those cities can be quite spread out if you have a large empire.

                    So that's what that means!

Yeah, yeah. They already got me on this in the thread I started.

Still a good thread though, 'cause you know there are little trivial things that aren't in the manual.

Oooh, I should add that to the thread.

In my game, Bombay is the holy city for Hinduism. Now, let's say I'm foolish enough to let Bombay get razed to the ground. Would another Hindu city be promoted to Holy? Or would there be no holy city for Hinduism any more?

I'm going to venture that another of your cities will get chosen as the Holy City. After all, you discovered Hinduism so unless you can build a shrine, no one can build a shrine.

Of course, I've been wrong before... (see above).
