  • How to destroy your OWN cities?

Ok, here's the thing. I captured an enemy's citiy and chose to keep it. But later I decided that I'd better off without it. I can't find a way to destroy the citiy though.

Can anyone help me on that? Or is it impossible in this game?

    Thanks in advance.

I had a similiar feeling when I rode over one of my enemies and kept all of the cities. I later realized I could NOT afford them! But I couldn't "let them go" either. Wouldn't it be neat if you could abandon a city to barbarians? Although, I am not sure it would be justified. What civilization is ever going to just "adandon" a city?

Lack of an "abandon city" option will be a major impact on demo games. Does none exist?? Haven't had a reason to use it yet in SP.

Rome for one, they abandoned whole regions. But I think its realistic enough, tactical withdrawls have happened all the time or rulers deciding X city isn't worth having. There should be an abandon city option that doesn't raze the city but leaves it open. Then in say 1 turn assuming you have no units in it, the city switches controls to the barbarians.

No it's not possible in Civ 4, you can't even starve your city out of existance anymore.

I wonder if they took that out of the game due to fears of people whining "OH NOES!!1 THIS GAME IS PROMOTING GENOCIDE!!1"

I don't think there should be an option to raze your own city - when cities were abandonned historically, the military and government simply withdrew from them, rather than razing them to the ground.

Presently, you can get rid of a city by gifting it to another civ. It would be a nice touch if you could "gift" a city the same way to barbarians - effectively representing granting it independence, though.

There's another thing I noticed: it seems that when you conquer a city, you don't get the option to raze it if it has your state religion. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Demogames are the best example of WHY it's not possible to abandon your cities any more.

I think it's good that you cannot simply abandon your own city, as this would make the strategic decision of whether to raze or keep a newly conquered city pointless - since you would be able to abandon it later anyway. If you keep it and then can't afford - you can give it to another civ - which will strenghted your potential rival or try to manage it - so that's another strategic decision there. Simply abandonning it would be a no-brainer in some circumstances, and Civ 4 is about removing as many no-brainers from the franchise as possible.

But "granting independence" (giving it to barbarians) would be very interesting indeed. I support this ideea, if it is ever going to be considered in future patches/expansions.

Though it's not hard to simply gift the city and then raze it ...

Of course this requires you to declare war and damages your relationship with that civ, if it is an AI.
