scoring?

Could someone explain the way this game scores your performance? I am playing at the default difficulty, When I got about halfway through I was shown the rating screen and was "supposed" to be the most "glorious" civilization. So I saved the game and retired, the final scoreing rated me @ Dan Quayle- (boy it must stink being him after all these years). I'm finishing the game and down to the last 90 turns but I would like to know how this thing is scored. My civs are happy, I get the smilie face and fireworks (nice touch there ) in many cities. It seems like I should be considered more than a Dan Quayle clone
