The new combat system seems to heavily favor defense. Capturing cities can be very difficult, especially since the AI likes to plop huge armies inside them and never come out.
By working faithfully eight hours a day, you may get to be a boss and work twelve hours a day.

Let's see here: Longbows, base strength of 6. They get +25% for city defense, +25% for hill defense, +25% if they've been fortified for 5 turns or longer, the defense rating of the city, and any promotions they might have. In addition, there's the first strike chance. The AI likes to build walls, and cities on hills aren't exactly unknown. Imagine, the target city has a wall and is on a hill, defended by three longbowmen, each of which has been long fortified and has the city defense promotion. Add that up, +50% (wall), +25% (hill), +25%(fortify), +70%(defending city+defending hill+promotion) and you wind up with a whopping +170%, or a final strength of 16. Your 4 modified to 6 isn't really going to put much of a scratch in that, much less dent it. It's far less pronounced with archers (no innate bonus for defending city or hill), but they'll still add up to a lot.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

and with barracks and a city def upgrade for basic archers it still hurts. swordsmen get +10% when attacking cities. get them 2 upgrades (barracks + theocracy) and you can get +10% strength and 25% vs archers. or 2 city raider upgrades.

war is not for the faint of heart, you have to be willing to go all the way and make sacrifices, also in civ4 a single unit army is BAD. think rock paper scissors. you need this to counter those and that to counter these etc.

ah, before attacking hold in the right mouse button over your enemy to get the combat analysis in the left corner. if their number is higher than yours, dont attack. unless you have superior numbers.
