  • Permanent Alliances

Didn’t see anything about this in other threads.

Quick question: The tech to form permanent alliances is “Communism”. However, when I obtained the tech, the option was not available to me in the Diplomacy Screen.

Do other Civs need to have this tech as well, or am I missing something simple? (I don’t feel like gifting techs to the AI to test this, because I may or may not enter into the alliance).

I was wondering about this too. I got around +22 relations with Ghandi with a defensive pact and never saw the option for the permanent alliance. Gifted him communism, that didn't do anything either. We were both at peace with everyone so I don't know why I don't see perm alliance the option in the trade screen.

Is it working as designed? I would imagine that no offensive alliances makes things more 'fair' as you can't make any alliances of doom or anything, but it stinks that you either have no allies or a defensive pact and if you declare war, the pact is broken. Makes ya feel much more alone than in previous civ games.

I believe that permanent alliances is an option you have to activated before the game starts, without that option can't you use them. Under "custom game"

The only way I've gotten Permanent Alliance to work is in a MP game, when you are setting up the game.

At the top, where the players are, once everyone on your team has joined, have everyone pick the same Number in the 2nd or 3rd column - unfortunately, it's not labeled, but if you and your buddy both pick 1, you can tell at the outset, as you'll have LoS anywhere he has troops, including his starting settler/warrior. If you can't see it on your minimap, you didn't do it right, try again.

As far as doing this in-game, I have no idea.

I believe you need Communism and Fascism or some other combination before you can do it. I'm pretty sure it mentions that there's more than one requirement for permanent alliances in-game, in "Sid's Tips".

What is a permanent alliance supposed to give you?

The one time that I was going for it, the reason that I tried is because I figured that would be a great way to remove on of my military worries. I was in first place, trying to keep the second place player from surpassing me. A permanent alliance with the third or fourth place player would have been a great way to make sure that one of them wasn't going to take the second place player's side.

Shared resources. The Civ I want to ally with (in my case, also India, and also on great terms) has oil deep in his territory (Huge Map). Can’t get Gandhi to trade it. I need oil to produce tanks.

Can you break a permanent alliance once it's established?

No. Otherwise it wouldn't be a permanent alliance.

Your ally can get wiped out though, and the AI will notice your fall in power: my ally got wiped by culture flipping, and suddenly, everybody closed their borders to me, canceled their trading deals, etc.

Permanent alliance is essentially the same effect as being on the same team. Shared sight, shared techs, shared wonder effects. Bound by the hip 'til the end.

I found today that if you're on the same team as someone (or in a permanent alliance with them, I assume), and you research the tech for a new religion, one of their cities can become the holy city for it. I'm wondering now if being the first to Music in such an alliance means that your ally could get the GA.

On the plus side, it seems they can't ever have less than "friendly" relations with you! Good news, since my ally founded (actually I founded it, the lazy slackers...) and converted to a different religion than mine.

If you're the first one to discover Music you will always get the Great Artist, don't worry... And "GA" is the abbreviation for Golden Age, ya know?

Whoops. Didn't even think of it. Still getting used to a lot of this stuff! Back in my day, we didn't use specialists until the city was over size 20! Still had an abbreviation for 'em, though. It was: "worthless".

If i want to win by conquest, i.e eliminate the enemies, will permanent alliance save my ally?
