  • So how does culture flipping work?

There's that french town that shows 0% french. And since i'm the only one around with a city i guess i must own 100%.

The french city has no culture whatsoever, only the basic radius, minus the part i cover with my culture.

So how do i get this city to flip? Its a small 1 pop town with 3 defenders. Its even cut off to the "main" french empire.

i thought Culture flipping was out

and rumor is the AI will trade you the city if they feel its a drain.

Ninot, flipping is in. The way it works is, the city goes into resistance (same as what happens when you conquer it), and then flips, if the other side doesn't do anything about it (not always, sometimes it has to revolt a couple times, I think).

Now, precisely what would trigger the city to go into resistance, that I don't know. I thought that % of the population would do it, but like you I also observed that that doesn't appear to be the case.

I think it mostly depends on how much of the city radius you take away. Wehn the city is completely enclosed in your borders, it will flip. And I also noticed that if you take away 50 - 60% of the radius, it doesn't seem to ever flip. Though I haven't played around with testing this, and it's based on the experience of waiting for numerous turns for a city right on my border (next to the capital no less) to flip, to no avail.

duh.... 3 turns after my original post it went into revolt.

It took for freakin ever to do that though.

I wonder what the % per turn is that it will go into revolt.

Btw... I only controlled 4 out of the 9 squares, with the 5th (city) also being 100% mine.

          What the hell....

After 2 turns of revolt it went back french... but its still 100% mine as far as culture goes.

This can't be right... must be a bug.

As i just said, it went into revolt, 2 turns later it went french. Then again 2 turns later it magically became mine without another revolt?

Does Open borders and close borders do anything?

I have a Indian city thats almost enclosed. Using the numpad as reference. Indian city as 5, 8741236 is all mines. Only 9 is left.

I turn off the borders because I thought that might create problems for the Indians, since I converted all their cities to my state religion and closing the borders would cut their people off from my holy city, but its been so many turns, and the Indian population is only 44%. Any advice?

There will be a number of revolts.

It seems that the farther the town is from your capital is deciding and I think religion is also of influence.

If you're the world leader, the town probably be yours on its second revolt. if you're facing a strong enemy and you're not top class it can take quite some time.

I'd say check on the city's cultural status (yours) that is taking over the city.
It's probably, the higher your city status, the easier the takeover will be against a new city.

Dificulty level is also important I reckon, on settler they flip like madman, on Warlord they're allready requiring a lot of culture..

I like to post sentry units on cultural borders as well, not that it has any effect on the current culture but I like to think there is some kind of radiating effect.

I have my whole border full of gunships and modern armor on my border sentrying. I have 2 legendary cities with 22000+ culture, but they are about 1 city behind my border city.

Is there any tips on getting more great artists? I've havent seen any for about 100 turns or more.

Well, the only way to get MORE great artists is either through your Leaders profile or by building buildings which increase the birth rate of great persons. There isn't some button you can push to pop them out.

Yeah, I know that. I got most of my wonders in my captial. ANd lately all it's pushing out is Great Merchants. I got like 3-5 great artists only. And its already 1988!

Well, you can't expect them to churn one out every 50 years now can you?

You can also get some Great people by being first at researching a tech. I know music gives you a Great Artist. Not sure about others though.

Are Great People related to your overall Culture output? I.e., does increasing your Culture slider help?

I've seen several city flips to me, generally in the circumstances that were also the most common in Civ3. Typical scenario is on small "colonial" islands, where I build a city on the west side about the same time someone else builds a city on the east side. I put a priority on getting the city up to being functional and cultured, using rush building, etc., while the AI city just sits around, so my culture overwhelms it, gradually losing territory until it flips.

I'm curious whether having open borders and your own military units in the flippable city makes a difference. I had an Explorer unit in one AI city that had an unsuccessful revolt prior to the final one. Interestingly, the explorer took some minor damage. I wonder if I'd had more serious military units in the city, if the revolt would've succeeded?
