  • Question on unhealthiness

I know that certain improvements and population can cause unhealthiness, along with building on a floodplain which I found out today.... but here is what I can't understand.

Why can't I tear down the coal plant once I can build a hydro plant? Is there anyway to remove old improvemens in when new ones come along.

Also, if the recycling plant negates the unhealthiness penalty from buildings why am I still getting an unhealthiness penalty for my coal power plant. There is no green sickness circle beside it on the building listing on the left side of the screen but when I hover the mouse over the unhealthiness icon at the top I am shown -1 for floodplain, -2 for power and -27 for population.

hmm.. I saw no unhappiness on the left side and assumed it had gone away

I bet this is a bug... they made it go away on the left side.. but not in the actual calculation?

I also generally build one or two coal plants, before building nuclear/hydro/World Wonder

I don't recomend building power plants in any civ games. Build Hoover's Dam [Civ II - III] / King Georges Dam. [Civ IV] instead and get free non-polution power to factories.

The Three Gorges Dam only gives free power to your cities on the same continent that the wonder is on so cities on other continents are out of luck. The hydro plant provides pollution free power but your city needs to by a water source.

We've established in another thread on the main forum that even though you've built a more advanced cleaner power station, the coal plant is still there.

However, its effects are gone. The cleaner power supply will supercede the coal plant. When moving the cursor over the sick faces it breaks it down (as you've stated). Once a cleaner station has been built, the sick faces from power are gone.

With that said, i've only tested it with nuke power plants, not hyrdo. So i can't verify if hyrdo's work or not.

now about the recylcing plant. It says it removes all sick faces from buildings. I think its obvious that the game seperates "power" and "buildings" (since it lists them seperatly) so naturally, power sick faces are still being produced. How would you recycle waste from a coal plant anyway?

I never build Coal plants in any Civ game. The pollution/unhealthiness just isnt worth it, unless your in a desperate war situation.
