You know I am just glad that someone saw that and pointed it out to me really - thanks for that - this way I can just pack up Civ4 for now and get my mind on other things..

It is upsetting this is for sure, however I have two PBEMs from Civ3 and I can always just keep my eye out for good deals on better laptops...

Like I said, thank you for your help as it has saved me much time and frustration of finding out on my own. I trust that there is some purpose for this unfortunate event and will simply live happily in my confined NO CIV4 ZONE for now..

I just wish that everyone who realizes that their machine was inadequate would adopt your attitude.

Now, just a sec here. I'm seeing lots of threads where folks are being told the above or some variation of "if you don't have a top of the line, cutting edge machine you're just out of luck."

It should be noted that the game is *supposed* to run with a 64MB video card (GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better). Lots of these folks have a better card, and are still having problems.

Personally, I've got an 128MB NVIDA GeForce PCX5300. More than meets the requirements, yet with everything turned to minimal the game still crashes after 1 turn (oh, and it's a Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz machine, with 1 GB RAM as well) once I get to the 1800's in the game. Given the other posts on the web, yeah, it's probably my video card. However, it's frustrating that the company that sold me the game wasn't honest about what kind of card I would really need to play the game. They should have listed at a minim requirement the 128MB card, but said to really use all the features (ie really play the game) you're gonna need at least a 256MB card.

My comment was refering to these people who are getting black terrain because they don't have a Hardware T&L compatible card. No doubt there's other issues with the game, and maybe your problems are one of them. But many people are just being down right hostile when they're told their video card just doesn't meet the requirements, instead of accepting the news graciously, like ElConejo has done.

And I don't think the memory of your card would make that much difference. The basic architecture of it is getting old though. The 18 month rule of obsolescence no doubt applies to video cards as it does to processors.
