Every so often, my game said it was autosaving. I had a CTD, and... No autosaves. Nor any hint of where they would be if there were any. Nor any configuration options relating to them. ??

Have you ever loaded the game from a different directory than the one in '/$user/My Documents/My Games/Civilization 4/Saves/single'?
I found that after I had loaded from a diferent folder on the C: drive Civ had created a whole copy of the 'My Games' directory structure, and it was saving my auto saves there, even after I switched back to the '$user/My Documents....' save location -
Thats right you have to expand the "single" sub-folder to see the "auto" folder underneath. There is also a "quick" sub-folder but looking in the manual it doesn't list a quick-save key. Control S just does a regular save.
Sadly autosave doesn't save often enough, only every 8 years. I'd also like it too keep many, many more autosave files than the few it keeps now. The files are small...Comment
