After a good first two days, I had no crashes to desktop. I did have one hard freeze (had to reboot). Now, I get crashes to desktop FREQUENTLY (every 10 minutes). I also get hard freezes. I have 8gb ram, so I doubt a memory leak is killing me that soon.

    Any help out there?

I've tried a bunch of settings in the .ini file, and they didn't help (e.g., turning off unit animations, running it in windowed mode, etc.).

How on earth could they release a game in this state? First the ATI problem, now this.

Did it ever occur to you that it might just be your card? That thing is ancient and grossly in need of replacing. I've been playing the game on a GeForce 8800GT for ages and I've never had a problem, so the issue has absolutely nothing to do with Nvidia cards in general.

PS: Oh good lord, I just replied to a 4 year old post. Why do people keep reviving these ancient threads? Leave them dead and buried please.

      Its the zombie effect.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

I like how my 5 year old hardware runs BtS just fine. (P4 3.2 ghz, geforce 5600, 1 gig ram, etc.)

Most older systems will run CIV. It's just people try to do huge maps, lots of civs, heavy mods, etc. and then wonder why they have trouble.

My computer is pushing 2 years now and it's still doing fine. But I have 4gb memory and a good graphics card (nvidia 9800 or thereabouts).

            Believe it or not...

crashes seems to be strictly related on how many savegames files you have
            in your savegame folder.

Deleting all my savegames files, freeze, reboot and blue screen are disappeared.

            I hope to be helpful.

I'm glad that seems to work for you... but I have no clue how the number of saved games could have any impact what so ever on an active game

Coincidence only, unfortunately. Crashes come from your RAM once the game is working. The RAM only cares about what is loaded now, not what is on your hard drive. Even if you use flash RAM, the only influence would be if your hard drive were nearly full. Any modern pc/laptop should have plenty of hard drive space.

I began playing Civ IV and BtS on my soon-to-be 6 years old desktop, which wasn't exactly "bleeding edge" even back in october 2003 when I built it : P4 2.4GHz, 512 Megs Ram (I added another 512 after I bought Civ IV), Radeon 7500 graphics, WinXP. Then I bought a cheap laptop because my wife was complaining that she can't use the PC anymore ). Now I'm playing on a Vista low-end laptop from 2009 which is performing only slightly better than my desktop

Isn't an 8500 a really skimpy and minimalistic laptop graphics card? Yes, the 8000 series is relatively recent, but thats still a very small laptop/portable/extreme budget card that just isn't fitting in with the rest of your system.

                      Solved it here

I had the same problem here.

Tried every sugestion found in this and other lists, but the game continued to freeze after some turns.

Finally I realized that when running in a window, not in full screen, the game didn't froze, not even once.

So run it in a window. It's not the best solution, but worked.

                      Good luck you all.
