Improvements in Civ 4

Hi! Havn't posted on this forum in about a year now since I got bored with Civ 3, so i'm well behind with questions about Civ 4, a quick few:

1) Does the religeon aspect work well?
2) Has the diplomacy model been advanced much?
3) How does combat work now? The old Civ 3 system seemed faintly rediculous compared to Rome: Total War, one of the reasons why I switched.

Solver and MarkG's previews right here on 'Poly are a good place to look. The reviews section has pointers to some other good ones - I'd recommend Sulla's as it is a step by step guide to the game as he plays.
