Attacking fighters vs defending fighters (fighter does a bombing run instead?)

What do i have to do to destroy fighters? I can't send my 10 fighters vs their 1 and overwhelm them.. I can't "attack" their fighters.

The only option i get for my own fighters is to intercept for my city or bomb their city.. why cant FIGHTERS fight FIGHTERS? What can take out a fighter?

Send one on a bombing run- it will engage the other fighter if it gets intercepted, no?
