What happened here? As I recall from civ 2, after you constructed you space ship and launched it, you still had to wait a number of years for the ship to reach Alpha Centauri. In the mean time there was a chance you rivals could sabotage your victory. Now as soon as the ship is built... instant victory. I wonder why that was changed. I don't know how it was in civ 3 because I never played it all that much.
