  • NVIDIA GeForce4 460 Go woes

Sorry for what may be a repeated topic, but I'm clueless about how computers work and the other bits of advice haven't seemed to help my problems (as I can't find how to change the settings that other people talk about) I have had the sound skipping in the opening movie as well as the black terrain during the game. [There is no Cheshire cat problem for me in the tutorial] Zooming out let me see land, but its too far out to see units. The WorldBuilder lets me see the land, but it turns black again when I exit it.

    I'm running a Toshiba Satellite 5205 laptop
    Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 2.0 GHz
    Win XP SP2
NVIDIA GeForce4 460 Go, Driver 3.6.3.9 which seems to be the higher it'll update the driver to, even though its dated 8/15/2002.

Game seems to run, but I haven't gone more than a few turns as I can't see anything. Anyone have any luck or experience with my video card? Thanks.

an update.....well, the game seems to run somewhat slowly, but maybe that's a design choice, as the workers zoom to their location when I used the go-to command
I am able to run the game mostly fine with the WorldBuilder letting me see the whole map. Unfortunately, man, it is boring knowing where everything and everyone is.
The sound still skips every second or so regularly when playing back Wonder movies. The Wonder video is smooth though and the other in-game music, Spock voice-overs and sound effects are smooth.
Well, I'll try to check that out next.
I just checked, I have no Cheshire cat problem in the tutorial.

I almost wish I had ATI as at least there's a lot more people working on that problem.

oh and the recent NVIDIA update (Windows XP/2000 32-bit Version: 81.85 Release Date: October 20, 2005) won't update me. It goes through the set-up program but says there are no updates compatible with my hardware. Using the Update Driver through the Device Manager finds no updates either.
Toshiba also says that theres no higher update for the nVidia that the 3.6.3.9 from 2002

You can get modified Nvidia drivers for laptop Geforce 2Go cards at laptopvideo2go.com. It worked for me! It took away the black terrain.

Which driver version worked for you or can you post a link to the the specific forum thread there that lets you know which version to download?
After a lot of searching I found one that it said should be compatible, but no improvement in the game visuals.

I used 81.87 from here . Make sure you read the FAQs on the forum to install it correctly. They explain how if you overwrite the .INF file, it will be compatible for laptops. My machine is slightly different from yours (I have a Tobshiba Satelllite 2435-S255 with Geforce 420Go), but I would think that it would work for you. If not, keep trying different driver versions from that site.
            Good luck!
