Working and playing
System Specs:
Compaq X1030US
Pentium M 1.4 GHz (Banias)
768 MB RAM
40 GB 4200 RPM HDD
Mobility Radeon 9200 (64 MB)-added after purchase
I am playing the game just fine, but I did have to do a little tweaking. One, you have to use different video drivers than those supplied by HP for the X1000 series (I tried the latest HP drivers). I took the advice of others on this forum and used the Omega 5.6 drivers. I also turned the detail down to Medium on the game. So far I have been playing games at WXGA (1280X800) on Standard maps all the way through and having no problems. I'll probably bump up the detail once I get the new Dothan core into my machine.
Hope this helps.
PS: I think this more a problem of the distributor rushing the final production time of the game, and HP not keeping the drivers up to date for their products. I think Firaxis did an excellent job with this game, and I hope the next project is a remake of Alpha Centauri.Typos are the result of big fingers coupled with small keyboards.

Like other people who have posted in this thread, I also have a Mobility Radeon 9200 on a Compaq Presario X1000 series laptop.
The problems I have when attempting to start a new game are identical to those described by Cadamus and Firehawk. (My machine locks up after hearing the introductory voice over by Nimoy). However, the game plays fine for me if I start the game on my desktop machine, play one turn and then transfer the game to my laptop.
From reading this thread (and others in the forum) it seems the problem is that HP doesn't have up-to-date drivers available for the Mobility Radeon on Compaq Presario laptops.
As suggested in this thread, I have downloaded the drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net/. Unfortunately, I'm not an expert at uninstalling and installing drivers and so I've been having some trouble getting the omega drivers installed (I think this is just my stupidity).
In particular, I can uninstall the old Mobility Radeon 9200 drivers, but then Windows wants me to reboot and when I reboot without a display adapter installed, Windows XP "helpfully" finds the original Mobility Radeon 9200 drivers that came with the machine and uses those. I've tried this cycle of uninstall old drivers, reboot, install Omega drivers several times in various orders (sometimes I install the Omega drivers before rebooting, sometimes after) and I can't seem to get Windows to actually use the new Omega drivers.
So, if anyone could point me towards some instructions for uninstalling and installing drivers in general (or even better the Omega drivers in particular) I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot.

hi
civ 4 is now working on my computer (ati mobility radeon 9200, 512MB RAM, centrino 1,7 GHz), i can even play map size "standard".
What I did:
-installed latest ati drivers provided from HP
-unchecked "Write Combining"
-set OpenGL and Direct3D sliders to "Performance"
When I start a new game, i wait untill autosaving is finished and "4000 BC" appears in the right top corner of the screen.

doesnt work for me
To Fondue:
I tried out your recommendations with the 'Write Combining' and performance sliders on my zt3000 and it didn't really do any good. I have the latest drivers from HP.
What model of computer are you running the game on? Is it the presario (x1000 or whatever) or the pavilion zt3000?

finally
I tried this solution using these omega drivers and it seems to have worked for me as well. Doesn't run as well as on the desktop, but I suspect that's just the differences in the systems. Alas, nothing is perfect, but I can finally stop coming here. My computer does now think that I'm using a mobility radeon 9000 instead of the 9200, but I doubt that matters much (hopefully it won't affect any other programs). Anyhoo, hope this works for people with HP zt3000 systems.
