  • When do you make city #2, #3??

When are you finding it possible to create your second city?

    What about your third?

I always get lost in the game and end up with the pop-up advisor reminding me to make more settlers. I know I should have create them by then but everything is just so fascinating that I get sidetracked.

I create my second city after my first hits 3 population, typically. The third is harder because I typically have to choose between a wonder or a settler next.

Is there a CIV reason ofr is this a holdover from ICS?

I hadn't thought of it that way...

Well, you obviously can't create a settler *before* 3 without it taking forever. Either 3 or 4 works, I think, but I like my second city earlier, personally. Plus, you tend not to have a lot of things to build early on anyways.

You can't keep this up though. The maintenance will kill you if you try ICS.

I also wait until the city reaches 3 pop. I think I got this advice from Sullla's preview. I meanwhile prebuild barracks or something else.

I'm in my second game and I have to say, I should really sprawl out cities a little bit faster. I've got 3 and the AI is about to build it's fourth. All this "don't build em too fast" advice from the previews made me slower than I should be.

Don't forget to build a worker before building a settler.

And also don't forget to build an escort! Stupid fauna.

Does anyone know the formula for city maintenance cost?

In the handful of games I've started, at the Emperor level you certainly need a couple of stout garrison units (warrior and archer - even 2 archers) - to fend off the barbarians. This delays when you can start that settler.

And, as mentioned above, the settler (at that level) always needs an escort to fend off bears/lions/barbarians as well as to garrison the base while it builds its own warrior and archer

Thus the city might be at size 4 or 5 before you can realsitically start on one - and that begs the question - should you build a worker first (and he, too, needs a warrior escort when in the fields/hills, or he is just dinner for the lions and bears)

It'd be interesting to see if the AI civs get harrassed by the barbs et al as much as the human player does

I have been going a lot slower on the city building. There seem to be so many building choices early and with the way I have been playing, barbarians have been a real issue. I have had to take more than a couple newly built and defended cities from the ravening hordes.

I think from now on, I am going to try to secure the sites I want to build out better before I send out settlers. No more settler with one warrior or archer.
