  • Glossary of Terms

    Okay, we (sort of) had this for Civ3, time to do one for Civ4. Common abbreviations and terms explained for the non-initiated. Please note that I want to focus on common ones, the Civ3 list in my opinion had quite a few fairly obscure ones. Also note that this is not just for abbreviations but also for other terms that the new users may not be familiar with, and I included explanations along with the terms.

    Feel free to submit your own, I will update this post on a regular (but not daily) basis. I reckon as Civ4 grows older more of these will be developed by the community. Remember, they have to be common and relevant for Civ4.

    Edit: Eternal thanks to vovan to learning this old dog a new trick on how to avoid whitespace in tables

      I know but that makes it impossible to keep up-to-date. Fortunately vovan knew a solution that should be much, much wider known that it currently is: put the table in code tags

        Some vital terms are missing!

        gpt = gold per turn
        spt = shields(hammers) per turn
        cpt = culture per turn
        fpt = food per turn
        gppt = great person points per turn

        RoP = Right of Passage, now Open Borders (OB)

        And the granddaddy, "can't believe it's missing" item:

        SoD: STACK of DOOM! (Large group of military units)

        Also missing:

        RB = Realm Beyond, significant Civ community
        C4P = Civ4Players ladder, significant Civ community

        SG = Succession Game (team of players playing one civ in serial fashion, one at a time for a batch of turns).

        AW = Always War, a new game option in Civ4

        Probably more missing, but I have to get back to playing Civ4 now!

            Probably has many versions as most @{@#{ acronyms have but:
            CTD : Crash To Desktop
            BSOD : Blue Screen Of Death

            CT : Chieftess??? (moderator at CFC)

            CFC : Civilization Fanatics Center ( other Civ fansite)

            Civ : Civilization (Game )
            Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

              Updated. Left out RB as I don't think that's exactly common (outside RB itself) and RoP as that's a civ3 term and so far in my experience people seem to be accepting the term Open Borders just fine (contrary to hammer vs shield ) I don't know what CT's supposed to be (beyond alva's suggestion), didn't add that either.

              Also added Democracy Game (full term), Succession Game (full term), FoW, HPT (Hammers Per Turn), OB (Open Borders), OS, Py, Shield (for the real newbies ).

                    C4P isn't that much bigger than RB, but go ahead and dis us like that, it's OK.

                    RoP may also still see significant use in some quarters (when folks discuss RoP Abuse and other Civ3 terms that may take a while to disappear -- it will take folks a while to learn the new rules!)

                    Oh well. I tried.

                    OOS! Another important one. (MP only)

                      I meant the abbreviation isn't very common, not that RB is not worthwhile or anything... although it isn't

                      Hmm, yeah, that kinda makes sense.

                      Indeed! I swore I added that, but apparently not...
