  • Coming to the Mac in 2006

Hey Macintosh users: get ready to join us PC folks in the latest chapter in the Civilization saga!

From developer Firaxis Games and publisher Take-Two Interactive under their 2K Games label, Civilization IV is being ported to the Macintosh platform by Aspyr Media, the company that brought "Civin-space"`s Alpha Centauri and expansion Alien Crossfire to the platform in 2000 [see related stories].

Word of this news has already spread to a number of Macintosh gaming websites today, including Inside Mac Games and Macworld (MW). No specific month for the release has been set to date, but MW is reporting early 2006.

Maybe they should take a leaf from Blizzard's book and try shipping them at the same time, on the same disk.

      What for?

      Serious gamers have PC's.

I bet the market for Civ4 games on Mac is going to be less than 1% of PC sales.

They will probably lose money making a Mac verison.

To us, it is the BEAST.

And to think I was upset to learn that my preorder just shipped today...

Blizzard seems to be doing well by not ignoring the Mac users.

Now, now, don't be mean to the Mac Cult.

Take2 gives it to the Mac Developer, then publishes the game. Mac users, who have a vastly reduced amount of choice, rejoice at getting a great game. They'll buy a load of copies. Take2 makes money. Firaxis makes money.

I am one who likes my PC far more than I would a Mac; but I won't deny them joy at this announcement.

Yet another reason why doing so much of the game in Python was a smart choice, because it reduces the work necessary to port. How much it reduces the work depends on how they used it, but there are good possibilities there. I hope the mods are drop-in compatible.

Well as far as you are concerned, they haven't made any money. At least Mac user are more likely to buy the game, whereas you are still "evaluating" it.

I used to play Civ 2 on Mac and I don't have anything bad to say about it.

I also found it (quite stereotypically) to be more stable compared to PC-version. ...and I am not a Apple-fanatic. I am happy owner of two PCs

                      Touché!

I used to have a Mac and an announcement such as CivIV being ported to Mac would have had me peeing myself! The gaming titles list for Mac is pathetic, so show some mercy, Sava.

Why won't they get this game working on linux? There are probably more users of linux than macintrash(actually, the macintrash is now built off of the linux kernel...how funny).

I will get a life as soon as you get a real computer.

There may be. But there are more Linux distributions, and Linux users are much less likely to buy games.

Mac OS X is not built off the Linux kernel. Mac OS X is built on a modified Mach micro-kernel with a BSD layer on top of that taken mostly from the FreeBSD project, with additional components from various sources including NetBSD and OpenBSD.
