Just a question concerning DirectX. How are you able to tell what version you have on your system ?

Because I've noticed some folders named DirectX and one on C: called DirectX9 but they're all empty.
[edit] At last! finaly got the game working by deleting the Civ4 cache \%username%\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\ directory. Though strange thing is I tried that before and it wouldn't work.

Though I think it might be to do with the fact that when I used the Pakbuild program it for some reason created another art folder in My Documents. This art file folder turned out to contain more info then the art file in the Civ 4/Assets dir so I replaced the one in Civ4/Assets dir with this new one and I think that's what helped the game run. Anyone else get this odd problem?

I'm not sure if this will help you guys with 9800Pros, but I bought the game two nights ago, finally got around to playing it and....absolutely no problems at all. I did not have to use the fix.

Notes:

The game runs extremely well at 1280x960 with full detail. I made it to about 1400AD last night, with about 8 cities, and 6 A.I. or so. No graphic slowdowns at all.

I'm tempted to run 1600x1200.

I dont get the Renderer error though but the game is about to start then just shuts down... Any Ideas?

I have done what you recomended and everything is fine untill... the display engine starts to load. The program cuts out and drops me back to the desktop

Something it needs has been removed.

I am running XP with Radeon 7500 and new drivers and DirectX 9

The init thingy comes as far as the init engine and it seems as if the game should start. everything turns black and suddenly the screen is back to the desktop and the game client is nowhere to be found. Hopefully some1 knows how to fix this?

deleting the Civ4 cache \%username%\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\ directory should work. You have the same card as me and it finaly worked after I deleted the Civ4 cache. Make sure also you have view hidden files on under the folder options or else you won't find the Civ4 cache folder.

Have you used the Pakbuild program at all? if you have go and check to see if it has created an 'art' folder in your Documents folder. As for some strange reason it did to me and I took this 'art' folder out of Documents and put it into the Civ4/Assets folder and I belive this may have helped me get the game running.

Hey ho, this one worked for me aswell. I have a Radeon Mobility 9200 and I didn't even have the ATI 5.10 drivers, but an Omega driver. Nonetheless, before it was working and now it ain't, so thanks for this lovely tip.

Edit: Obviously I meant to say that before it was NOT working and now it IS, so thanks for the lovely tip.

Yes i used the pak program as instructed, and moved the art file from the folder as stated earlier. other than that i have done nothing except downloading whatever update on my radeon driver i could find :P
