I back-reved my sound card driver and now Civ starts just fine.

Civ would stop loading for me at check xml during startup. I finally figured out that my echo mia soundcard wasn't dx compatable. I had to create a new hardware profile and enable my motherboard sound for the game and disable my other sound devices. This got me up and running.

Sorry - still dont get this - why does it work if i create a new user?

Same sound drivers are installed under any user?

drvo- If you haven't figured out your what your sound card is you can do to things look it up in the hardware manager or consult the info that came with your computer.

Scottyb- Creating a new user account and installing Civ4 just for that account worked for me. My best guess is that it keeps other stuff from upseting Civ4. Plus, the new account doesn't load as much crap as my normal account does, so there's less stuff running.

Sorry dont buy that - on a driver level what account you use shouldnt make a difference.

Besides, im running the latest version of the sound drivers for my board Nvidia 5.10's and it dosent work under my normal account yet if i switch user to my new account it works. Same processes are running in the background.

Also to further this suggestion on a game where it dosent work you get this in the log....

                [58538.593] DBG: FILE Cat Init
[58542.109] DBG: NOT Using XML cache, failed to find crc.dat file
                [58542.140] DBG: Game Init
                [58542.140] DBG: Multiplayer Init

Where it does work you get the following...

                [474.390] DBG: FILE Cat Init
                [474.843] DBG: Using XML cache
                [474.843] DBG: Game Init
                [474.843] DBG: Multiplayer Init
                [475.109] DBG: Audio Init

Now look at the second line in each log entry - then in the second log entry look where it intialises the audio.

Now tell me if im mistaken, but i dont think this has anything to do with my audio drivers, unless the crc.dat is not important when initialising the game in which case i could be the audio. However - updating hasnt helped.

EDIT: done some more tesing - copied the crc.dat file from one account to the other and re-ran the game on the account which dosent work.

Now the debug is identical except it dosent update with the Audio Init so looks like it is the audio after all.

Still - there are no more recent drivers for my board - Any Suggestions?

If anybody else is using an Nforce 2 board out there with the onboard sound - what drivers do you use - does it work?

A Programmer from Firaxis posted that the XML problem was caused by a sound driver problem.

I guess it depends on how far you're willing to go, you might try a wipe and reinstall of windows and everything else. But there's no guarantee that would work...

Fixing my sound card made the xml init error go away.

Is anyone using NForce 2 onboard sound? If so does it work or not? If it does work, what drivers do you use?

                          I got mine to work.

I thought I'd try suggested solutions even though many of them didn't make sense.... it was just a shot in the dark but it worked.

I went back and downloaded/installed the newest drivers for my sound card, a Realtek High Definition Audio, and its working now.

                          I hope this helps.

I think, as others have said, that the next thing in the init.log file that fails is the sound card. Deal with the sound card.

You can find out what sound card you are using by, in XP, going to the control panel, going to the sound settings, go to the audio tab and look for hardware info.
