          Hi,
I have this issue (log file is exactly the same as the one posted). I have an Nforce 2 Motherboard with the Soundstorm chipset and the Nvida drivers.

However, as this was fixed by creating a new user account, i dont see how this could be to do with the drivers for the sound card - they are the same under any user account.

Please can you explain why you think its the sound card?

Updating the sound drives worked for me, thanks for the help Trip...you don't have any advice for the super low frame rates do you?

originalpckelly's work around by creating another user also worked for me. I played on that last night, until I got tired having to restart the game every 10 minutes because of the continuously slowing frame rate.

Oh, whats your sound card btw? I have a built in one, C-Media AC97, and I went to there site but it had a really old driver listed. I tried the windows update and Microsoft had a much more current driver for the card. So if your not sure if you have the most up todate driver you might try looking to see if Microsoft has it.

I have the same Message. I've already Tried:
-To install last Realtek High Def Audio Drivers (R1.26).
                      -To install XML Parser (3.0 & 4.0)
                      -To install .NET 1.1
-To desactivate Direct X Sound acceleration
-To install DX from the civ's dvd
-To put the sound on 0 in civ's ini
-To pick the crc.dat file from a friend, (the log say File XML OK but stop after multiplayer ini, so i think it's the sound which block)
-To create another windows account (I know there's no effect, i was desesperate ^^)

I have two computers, CivIV works only on the one i don't use. (mountainlion2, you have to know my other pc WORKS with a CMEDIA AC97 too)
                      Please help ... :'(

According to Trip this a sound issue, XML just happens to be the last thing seen before it CTD. My other computer has a Revolution 7.1 that worked great as soon as it was installed. As for my other computer, the one w/ the c-media AC97, it finally worked after I upgraded the driver for the sound card.

As for the slowing frame rate this thread helped quite a bit:

Just for my curiousity when you created a new account did you uninstall civ4, then create the new account, and then install it for only the new account? That's what I did and was my first initial breakthrough to being able to load the game on the machine.

I get the same problem - the gets to checking XML then shuts down.

init.log is the same as everyone else.

There are also 2 messages in the Event Log:

                          Event Type: Error
                          Event Source:
                          Event Category: None
                          Event ID: 0
                          Date: 10/28/2005
                          Time: 8:56:19 PM
                          User: N/A
                          Computer: GOTHAM
                          Description:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 7.
                          Data:

The other event log entry is has a 6 at the end instead of a 7.

I tried creating a new administrative user, but got the same error message.

I'm running a Compaq Presario R3060 laptop. Latest video (ATI) and sound drivers (SOUNDMAX).

I'm currenlty installing it on my GF's laptop to see if it's sepcific to this machine. /Fingers crossed.

                          *EDIT*

Game works fine on the GF's laptop. Looking through the log file on her PC and seeing what the startup window says, the problem is definitely audio related. Grrr.

I *KNOW* my sound card works fine in other DX9 games too. DXDiag reports no problems, and all the sound tests work perfectly.

I have this XML problem as well. I have Realtek AC97 audio on my motherboard. I did the following to fix it:

                            1) Updated driver by going to Realtek site. Did NOT work.

                            2) Created a new user with administrator rights. I did not uninstall and reinstall CIV 4 under the new user. Did NOT work.

                            3) Went to Microsoft and searched for XML Parsers. I had MSXML4, but not MSXML3. Downloaded MSXML3 with Service Pack 7. It WORKED! The link is:

download, software, update, Microsoft, product, computer, PC, Windows, Office, server, MSN, Live, game, Xbox, security, driver, install, trial, preview, demo, popular

I previously had problems with XML with Age Of Empires 3, which required MSXML 4, which is why I uninstalled MSXML 3. Anyway, hope this works for some of you.

XML Parser 3.0 sp7 doesn't work for me.
A thing in readme notifiy my attention:
"If you are experiencing sound problems, including volume issues, missing audio channels (i.e., no sound comes through your center speaker channel), crashes, or any other audio issues, we recommend switching your sound driver to the default MILES Fast 2D Driver."

What does it mean? I've made few search but no real results.

EDIT: In TOCA Race Driver 2, i had some laggy problems due to my sound card. This game worked great when i put sound quality to very low (but the sound quality stayed the same).

In my case, it was the sound card that was causing the error. I run Windows XP Professional 64bit. But, the settings are universal to all XP operating systems.

*Using classic view* Go into control panel and open sound and audio devices. Click on Voice tab and click on test hardware.

I received an error that my soundcard would NOT transmit voice simultaneously with receiving sounds. To correct this, I changed my voice recording default device from digital input to the port of my microphone. This fixed the problem immediately.

When I ran the test hardware a second time, it had a voice recording test and even though it did not register my speaking in the microphone, no problems were found.

I use a Realtek ALC880 chipset and I did download their latest drivers from the Realtek site http://www.realtek.com.tw/index.aspx
They were current as of Oct 18, 2005. Version R1.26
