Possible Fix: Checking XML Problem

If your civ 4 hangs at checking xml (like mine did) and when you enable logging in the config and get:

[58538.593] DBG: FILE Cat Init
[58542.109] DBG: NOT Using XML cache, failed to find crc.dat file
[58542.140] DBG: Game Init
[58542.140] DBG: Multiplayer Init

Then you should try and use it on a another user. I tried it on my clean user on which only programs that don't have the option "install for this user only" are installed and it worked. So I created another user. It worked on that. There must be a conflict with another app which has the option in its install to "install for this user only". So hopefully you installed it for the user you use to run civ 4, and not any others. I think it would probably not work if you did install it for all users. So we need to find this app.

I am doing this at the time of this post.

Open Office 2.0

GTK <-Probably This

If other people could post and tell if they have installed any of those it would help.

I had GTK, but uninstalled in earlier when I heard it might be the problem. THough my other computer has GTK installed, and Civ4 booted up fine. (The game is randomly crashing on me though). I haven't had Blender 3D installed in a long time, but I have installed it since the last time I wipped this computer.

I am having the same problem with Check XML, but I don't have any of those programs installed. I also tried creating a new user, that also didn't work. Any other suggestions?

YES. This has worked for me. Thanks so much. I created another user(named test account) Go to control panels->user accounts. Made a new account, an admin and changed accounts and viola the game works on the new account.

Two things before I go:
I don't have any of those programs you listed, I do have Virtual Daemon Manager 3.47 and InCD, I dunno.

Does this mean there is something wrong with my computer? What should I do?

I uninstalled, created a new user, installed the game while logged in as the new user.

Didn't work.

I don't have any of those things installed, although I suppose something else I've got may have installed GTK (I'm not sure how to tell if I've got that on my system).

Creating a new user account worked for me...my new problem is a really slow frame rate at high res...*sigh*...what happened to Civ? It used to be a rock that would work anywhere...

This issue is related to one's sound driver/card. Please verify you have a compatible sound card that is updated with the latest drivers.

Didn't work for me.
I also tried installing the .NET framework and upgrading Microsoft XML interpreters, but to no avail.
I have a lot installed, there are at least 2 candidates I can think of that could mess up the XML setup - Opera and OpenOffice 2.0.
But then, it can also be a problem with XML file codepages - my system codepage is Shift-JIS ( Japanese Windows XP).

I've got ADI 1981B integrated soundcard, and it's true it can be below DirectX9.0c specs.
Will check at once.

Simply upgrading the sound driver did the trick. Thanks Trip! Now I just have to figure out why the movies don't work ...

My sound card is a C-Media AC97 with the latest drivers I could get from Microsoft. I tested it with dxdiag and everything worked fine. But the framerate is still low when the graphics are set to high.

The sound issue is only related to getting the "XML error" on startup. It's not truly related to XML at all, that's simply the last message seen before this problem occurs, as originalpckelly adeptly discovered.
