It has nothing to do with the spces, but in how they're using the Hardware T&L on the video card. Civ 4 obviously relies on it more than those games do.

Here's my question about the World Builder "fix" - do you have to generate your own map and use that, or can you start up a game then as soon as it's loaded up, go to the in game options menu and get to World Builder?
You can just start up a game- you don't have to generate a map. I just played my first game using this quick fix and the game was still very enjoyable. I still don't know why my video card can show lit up tiles in the World Builder and not in the actual game mode, but oh well. I guess I will just keep on playing with the fix until that distant time in the future when its time to get a new computer.

I'm having the exact same problem with the black terrain and the invisible faces, and I have a Mobility Radeon 7500 which supports T&L and is even mentioned as the minimum video card in the Civ 4 book. It looks to me like more is going on here than T&L if I'm having the same problem as people with cards that don't support T&L.

I'm in world builder now and don't really understand how to "reveal all tiles"

Could someone walk me throught the steps?

          Thanks

Perhaps someone from Firaxis can explain why the terrain can be rendered in the World Builder but not in the game.

This does seem odd. I had a few problems with Rome Total War and Children of the Nile when I first installed them. But I fixed these by getting the most recent drivers - once I'd found out how to navigate my way around Intel's rubbish website.

Looking at screenshots for CIV IV, the graphics are certainly an improvement, but (no offence meant) they're hardly revolutionary! What exactly does this Hardware T&L do that's so important? Does it add anything really significant to the game? (I'm not sure I'm that bothered about tiny shadows on a map, or perfect flesh tones on animated figures) If not, why did they bother? At the very least, the option should have been included to turn it off.

Anyways, I look forward to getting my copy next week and experimenting.

              O.

Alright now I REALLY am confused on what's going on with this messed up terrain crap.

I just loaded up the North African Mod to check it out, and- lo and behold- the terrain looks fine. No more black terrain, not even greyed out, and I didn't have to use the world builder at all.

So why is my video card- which is supposed to be the problem- able to show the terrain fine in this situation but not when I play the actual game? Is T&L not required in this mod or what?

That's interesting... I'll have to try that out when I have a chance.

Well technicaly its possible to make T&L run over the processor. But question is rather how possible this is to integrate in civ4s current code. If it requires a major rewrite they may just not waist the resources required on it as its take2 that will be paying for patches etc not firaxis if it is as i suspect.

You know, its not so much the dark terrain that bothers me. I don't mind doing the 'show map' feature and then playing in the shade. What I don't like is the fact that I can't see the leaders, just the eyes/teeth/hat. To me, that ruins part of the game. I also suppose there is really no fix for it, huh?

No, that's another aspect of the T&L coding. It's all done through the hardware.
