won't even start on my primary gaming machine.

installing it on old graybeard that mostly plays mp3s at the moment.
By working faithfully eight hours a day, you may get to be a boss and work twelve hours a day.

Installed, but not able to get past the init screen due to graphics stall (nVidia TNT 64 - need to upgrade my graphics card anyway, so that's tomorrow's task!!)

All I get is the screen with the "World" on it and Civ 4 at the top and that's it. It won't advance and I have to ctr alt del to get out.

For those who have problems, the Civ community and some of the Firaxis guys are hard at work in the Civ IV Help thread.
          You should check it out.
I don't have my copy yet so i'm grateful for their hard work.
          What?

            I don't have a box

but the game runs fine on my machine (DVD Version):

            Athlon 64 3500+
            1 gig PC3200 RAM
            nVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra 256MB

although during the intro movie, it was a little choppy... I don't know what that was about... I was not running anything in the background.

I haven't played a game yet, I just wanted to load it up and see how everything looked.
To us, it is the BEAST.

All worked for about 2 hours then locked up full system.

                    Figured a mem leal.

                    Cycled Computer

                    Loaded auto save game LOCKED

Repeat next to last auto Save LOCKED

                    Hmm not a great sign

                    When is the 1st patch?

Spec is not very often the problem, it is a hardware device in the unit that the QA never had, or a combo of Software loaded.

Many companies, (not sure about the makers), only test on freshly installed OS. this is ok to start with, but the mid stages should always be on heavily used systems, because an update here and a loaded program there leads to odd crap.

Spent 5 years tracing such errors, and getting them fixed. Many time we would find an error in our SW that was masked until another device or program was sharing it, then BOOM.

I expect it is a mixture of some off drivers, with it being XML heavy, perhaps ver of Java Run Time , a few Mem leaks, and a few bugs.

BY the 2nd patch I expect to be 98-99% functional.

So post your errors, so they can see.
Update all you can on your side.
Post results, and this will help them kill them bugs.

Nope. CD-2's disc *image* is bad. Not the media (no scratches, no deformations, etc). The actual data on the disc itself is bad. I'm going to have to exchange it, and hope the next game's CD isn't from the same burner and batch.

I may have to go to "Alternative Media" services to be able to use my Civ4 license in the near future.

It's a bit sad. However, it is nice to know that Firaxis is being consistent with its QA (functionally non-existant as usual).

                            Kind of?

It runs, and I can play, but it has a lot of 'issues'. Some much more annoying than others. Copy protection, video glitches, and horrifyingly, slowdown (this machine can comfortably play D3/Q4/Fear, and I'm having problems with Civ4?

Is it a progressive slowing down of the computer as you play more and more turns? If so, it's probably a memory leak.

                              Wait for the first patch.

Sound is cuts out during wonder movies, probably will be fixed with a patch, otherwise runs fine.
