What this game like? I've never played a similar game so please don't expect that I'd know anything about it before you tell me. Also, if there is a similar game I can download for free please tell me (this is so I know what the game is like)

Check out this great walkthrough by Sulla:
It's very well written; too bad that only part 1 is ready yet. If you will read all the parts as Sulla posts them, I'm sure you will get the big picture.
As for a download, I believe there was a demo available for civ3, although you will have to google for it. Haven't heard about one for civ4 though. Also now that civ4 is on the market, you could try to buy a second-hand (or not) civ3 on eBay; you should be able to find a cheap one.
You gave me an idea actually: maybe I will sell my copy as wellAh no, I won't. Memories are more valuabe than money

I remember that from the first moment when someone told me about Civ (Civ1, of course), that you can build a civilization "from scratch" and you can invent the wheel (!!), so without even playing it I was in love with this game.
I played many games until now, but none of them for more than 10 years, except CIV !"The only way to avoid being miserable is not to have enough leisure to wonder whether you are happy or not. "
