  • Airpower?

Has airpower been covered in any of the reviews? Are there air units in the game or is it all completely abstracted? Can these air units get promotions?

I'm assuming it will be much like Civ 3's abstracted stuff but have yet to read any real details on this aspect of the game.

The only thing I've heard about air units is that they do not receive promotions

At least "not in the same way" as the land and sea units.

I am curious about the mechanics on airpower. I just know that I did not care for how it worked in Civ3 at all! Smac or even CTP had a better system IMO.

Anyone who knows, is airpower more like civ3 (airmissions) or more like civ2 (units fly from space to space).

I HOPE we still have air missions, and Civ4 didn't regress.

Basically, air units, instead of moving around the map, stay in cities and have an operational range. Then, you can issue them orders, which means tha they, say, attack a tile within their range or attempt to intercept planes - but the unit itself stays in the city. That's how air missions work, roughly.

                        Thank you Solver.
I will have to see exactly how the AI performs in this respect, but it does sound like an improvement over how the SMAC(X) AI's used a/c.

I think the air mission way is better...

Civ4 comes complete with fighter escorts for the bombers, right?

There are fighters, yes. But do you mean if the fighters will automatically escort bombers on their mission? Unlikely, for IIRC the range of fighters was smaller then that of bombers to begin with.
